Steep Learning Curve

Post by humdigadi »

Hello Everyone,

After a month of using the forums to get some invaluable advice (and buying a couple bits) I thought I should probably introduce myself properly.

I have recently bought a rather battered old Mk2 Rev 2 turbo from someone at work. I had to buy a battered one because it's main purpose in life in the short term is to be my chariot in a charity banger rally for whcih the car can't cost more than £500 (although you can spend what you want on it after purchasing it). When I bought her, she had a temperemental turbo, leaking t-bars, a serious battery drain, one hell of an oil leak and was in desperate need of a thorough clean!

After a little help from a local JDM specialist (Powerhouse) we found that the oil leak was at least in part due to the cam cover gasket, one of the front calipers was sticking and the issue with the turbo was just because the air filter on the induction kit had disintergrated blocking the airway. Fortunately, the body is pretty solid so I've got a good base to try and get her in the condition she's supposed to be. She could also do with a new radiator.

I've put new calipers on, fixed the battery drain and sorted out a new k&n air filter. It's still leaking a bit of oil so I've given the engine a good clean try and found out where it's coming from (the engine was caked in oil) and I have a horrible feeling the clutch it on its way out. I have a feeling I'll be spending a lot of time getting to know her! I'm afraid I'm not very mechanically minded so this is going to be my first lesson!:pale:

I've taken some 'before' photos but I don't think I have enough posts to to add them yet, i'll work on that. I am really looking forward to spending 5 days and 3000 miles with her touring across Europe!

Thanks to those that have helped me so far, please feel free to offer and advice that you think may help.

Matt

Sounds like a ideal learning car to be honest and the good thing with the old mr2 is there are millions of cheap spares!

good luck with the rally! :thumleft:
