[Mk2] [Turbo] Blitz exhaust bung do any damage?

Post by craig »

I have one of those bungs off eBay to go in the nur spec to quieten it down a bit.

The engine is stock, 1.2 bar with a decat and blitz nut spec r. If I fit the bung will it do any damage to the turbo regarding back pressure?

Surely that set up can't be as restrictive as cat fitted and stock exhaust at stock boost?

Thoughts and comments appreciated. :thumleft:

Well turbo exhausts need to be as free flowing as possible. I personally wouldn't use them on a turbo as I had them on my n.a and they did create a lot more back pressure so I wouldn't risk it. People will disagree and say there safe but that's just my personal opinion

I have a genuine blitz bung that came with the exhaust.

I think absolutely no problem using it, otherwise why would they provide it?

It does quieten it a lot....and you will notice a loss of power.

I only ever use it for the MOT. A mate uses his to be allowed to track the car at Bedford......no repercussions from that, and that's pretty hard testing.

Cheers, guess I'll just stick it in for MOTs :thumleft:

Was it not bolted in? Usually secured by a 10mm bolt.

Thanks for comments all :thumleft:

Nope lol we made it at work undersized and he didn't want to bolt it in. So obviously when it got hot the exhaust expanded and blew it out haha

A bung will do no harm they do noticeably reduce the performance though.

+1.

I'm not sure how they could "damage" the turbo at all? Yes, they restrict the flow of gases, but so does the standard exhaust and catalyst.

I've used one in my car for nearly 6 years now, probably half and half. It does reduced performance. With it in and the boost set to the same level, probably 2 psi or so, but when it's 6am and I'm setting off for work (or for that matter on a motorway haul) I can live with that :)

Hi Craig, I'm guessing that the restriction issue becomes more critical with the amount of boost being produced by the turbo - if (and not in your case) you were asking for an increase in boost pressure surely the turbo would have to work harder given the increase in back pressure. Sorry if this is un helpful - just looking at it from the logic side of things :thumleft:

Doing a bit of digging and talking to people, the bung seems to become a restriction running 1.3 bar+ I'm not, so shouldn't make any difference :thumleft:

When my MR2 was running a single exit exhaust (Apexi N1 style), I noticed with the bung in, it would hit full (raised) boost at 1.2 bar momentarily, then the restriction would stop the car boosting and pressure would go down to 0.8 bar and the car would slow down
