coil over springs - which do you think is the stiffer?

Post by boondougal »

So i have been having a discussion with mulaz over the coil over conversions that we have both done - pioneered by well known tinkerers of a brutal persuasion.

The issue is that generic kit (labelled Mx5) comes with the springs labelled F and R (front and rear) so as the MR2 is rear wheel drive i put the R spring on the front and visa versa.

Mulaz quite rightly pointed out that the spring labelled with an R is thicker, and i have noticed from the pic below it also seems to be wound tighter

The question is do you think from looking at the photo the spring on the left will be stiffer or the one on the right?

Take some measurements and calculate it:

I wouldn't trust that the actual number that comes out is necessarily accurate but on the assumption that they're both made of the same material it should be good enough for a comparison.

i have now decided to ditch these Chinese springs on my coilover conversion because of the unknown

suspect they are around 350lb 450lb ?. but without being tested know one really knows, the importers on ebay had no info.

feel that they may be too hard for normal day to day driving

so instead i have just fitted faulkner 8" 225lb spings on the rear and will be fitting faulkner 8" 175lb to the front.

Hoping these uk springs will give me a safer and more controlled drive over the Chinese springs

I do think that's a very sensible action tbh, I new they would be too hard but I was planning on getting it all together and working then get new springs from there!

Hmmm... Might just order some new ones
