ST165 Brake upgrade issue

Post by SuperRedMR2 »

Hi,

I used my car for the first time in a month and since the brake upgrade to the ST165 calipers and modded scoobie pads.

I noticed a severe clunking sound on the way home from work earlier. Sounded like something was coming apart at the front but on closer inspection its in fact a gap between the pad and the calipers when the pedal has been depressed and come back up again.

As you can see from the photo there is a minute gap which causes a racket when I put my foot on the brake.

As you may be aware I have not got the pad fitting kit clips on my pads I was sent the wrong ones by a company I got them from.

Would these clips prevent this gap?

Looks like you are missing the shims on the back of the pads too

The pads didn't come with the shims - they'd obviously prevent the gap, but would the noise still occur?

Are you sure it's not the up-down movement in the carrier causing the noise? Usually this is the cause of a clunk when moving away, and then when you first hit the brakes again. You can solve it by fitting clips or just using a bit of gasket paper to pack out the ends of the pads.

Its definitely not the ends of the pads, its where there should be a shim

Well the clips will hold the pad better in the carrier...

Some people make the mistake in thinking the outer pad needs to move freely up & down the carrier - however it just needs to held still and the carrier does the moving.

Does it clunk once then stop? if so would go with up down movement aswell, either way would definately get some clips sorted ASAP!

Is the car braking right and not pulling to one side?

if so then this gap will be closed up when braking. you should be able to check for wear against the disc, is this consisitant accross the pad face, and similar o the other side?

Have you refurbed / checked the callipers sliders aren't seized?

Also you say you have modded the pads? not sure what this involves, but are clearences good around all other sides.

Alex i did point out in your other thread that the clips were missing and would cause you a problem mate. Get the clips fitted and that should stop them clunking.

Suggest you put some packing in the gap you show in your pic Alex

Fold some bits of ali or (or even cardboard?)

As Neil said, get some spring clips on order PDQ

See if packing alters the noise

The biggest question in my mind is (because they're Scooby pads, not GT4) do they fit the caliper well enough ??

I'll put up with it for a few days as the engine change is the priority this weekend.

Has anyone got a toyota part no. for the clips?

Peter the ally would have to be about 0.5-0.75 of a mil, I don't have that kind of material laying around.

Yes the pads are fine.

Get both the clips and shims (and copper grease for back of pad/shim)

They aren't called "noise reducing brake pad shims" for nothing ;)

good luck with it all bud :thumleft:

it seems that BI only do the kit for a single piston caliper.. would be good if someone can verify this though.

I just spoke to my friendly Mr T parts guys. They are available separately if you want to order the individual parts or they are available as part of a front Axel pad kit, its about 50 quid but that comes with the Pads.

Its on back order available in about 10 days or so.

I don't know, he said that you would have to price all the parts separately as they do not do a "no pad" kit.

I doubt it would be cheap though....

It may be just as cheap to buy a complete set of callipers off a breaker...It wasn't something i thought off when i got mine, learning curve for next time defo.

Might be worth getting on the celica forums and seeing if anyone has found a supplier/ a solution / or has a spare set for sale.
