Return of the MR2 ?

Post by elbon50 »

Taken from todays Auto Express :

Thanks to the new GT86 coupe, fun is back on the agenda at Toyota. That could mean the return of the MR2

Talking at the Geneva Motor Show, GT86 head engineer Tetsuya Tada told us "I'd like there to be three Toyota sports cars again. We'd like to make an entry level sports car and a replacement for the Supra"

Not true, there's the GT86.

However, anything regarding an MR2 is simply wishful thinking at this point.

I've seen various thing's but given the GT86 isn't bland, I wondered why you commented that Toyota's offerings are bland for the forseable future?

Do please tell.

Presumably Tada san wasn't just wafffling when he mentioned another two sportscars ?

They may not emerge till far in the future perhaps :?

Like the X-type Jaguar replacement never seems to come to fruition

well the 2 most used words in the industry right now are eco & hybrid neither of which lead to fun as we know it, performance and sport are on the naughty step! any 2 seater is likely to be a city car with a big battery where the rear seats should be ](*,)

Cmon guys (and gals! )..!

This is a no brainer!

Take a Mk3, restyle some body panels, replace the (woeful) 1ZZ with a load of batteries, fit the motors, KERS system, etc....

eh voila!

A decent MR2 replacement, zero emissions, STILL decent weight distribution and could still be fun.....?

Oh..one last thing: RRP of around £25k max (THAT may be the killer...?! :? )

ok,ok...I've just re-modelled the Tesla...but you get the drift.....! :thumleft:

I seem to remember something about a new "MR2" here a couple of weeks back. Like a 3.5L V6 to the rear wheels and electric on the front wheels.

Found the link
http://www.autoblog.com/2011/12/01/mr2- ... oncept-ii/

It is not much of an MR2, but still might be the closest relative that toyota will produce in foreseeable future.

Concepts....don't you just love 'em..?

It certainly looks like the "fun" element of the MR2 has gone forever?
Mr.T seems to be geared more towards the "GT" side of things......? :?

MR2 is not a tourer (the Mk2 being a mistake, really! ): its key feature being its relatively light weight and decent handling..?

Any hybrid is going to suffer a fairly severe weight penalty. so its not going to have the MR2 "spirit", really, is it.....? [-X

As usual these days, pricing point will be the key: I, for one, would not consider paying £25k for any new MR2, unless its performance was stellar, compared to other mid-engined, non-exotic roadsters....

The world is in a period of austerity, don't forget...

...unless Toyota are hoping to time the launch of the new '2 to coincide with the start of the next "boom"..?

Look out for one around 2020, then.....
