removing airbag?

Hi all, I've recently just bought a mk3 steering wheel with airbag to fit in my mk2(No airbag) I have the mk3 wheel in front of me but want to know how to remove the airbag from the centre section so I can fit the wheel & centre section(without airbag) into my mk2?

Any help on this would be great.

Effective 1/1/12, it's now an MOT failure to remove airbags.

Also, your insurance compnay may not approve.

Hi Peter, I have a Rev3 Turbo, and it never had an airbag as standard in the first place.

Is there a safe way of removing the airbag from the centre section of a mk3 steering wheel?

Undo the 4 bolts

The metal cage then just unclips from the front

Clarky, How did you attach the horn? I noticed there is a 6 wire harness coming from the rear of my roadster steering wheel, is this now redundant? I can't see how to attach the horn.

Go steady with that casing! We designed an airbad detonation system for a client and got a pallet load to test with and they pack one hell of a punch!

I took precautions...

As I understand it, something tells the airbag to go off.
So unconnected it shouldn't go off, but you never know.

I made sure I held it on its side, so if it did go off, it would blow left and right rather than in your face, messy!






Cut your old connector off and add a spade connector.





Ignore the silver ring, thats for a momo wheel. It just shows the original connector with a spade connector attached.




Then, I can't remember exactly but I believe it fits to this tab...



And because the mk3 wheel sticks out a little further than the mk2 I added a little collar of speaker box fabric to finish it off.
But not essential.

Great write up and pics - the Roadster wheel on a Mk2 looks good

Just when removing the airbag, be very careful - you don't want one going off near you as it can do you some damage.

Some precautions I'd take would be to leave the car to stand ~ 12 hours before working on the airbag, and make sure you've earthed yourself before you start work on some pipework as a static spark could set off the airbag charge if you're unlucky.

One thing I've seen recommended is a resistor across the two airbag leads ( eg 100k ohm, Maplin - http://www.maplin.co.uk/100kandohm-to-3 ... ors-341656 - min res 100k ohm for 6p ) you may even be able to insert this into the plug or even short the two leads together using a pair of croc clips and wires - but it doesn't look like there's anywhere to 'hold' the lead ..

It wont fail and MOT if it has been removed there is no check to see if airbags are fitted to a car.

It will fail if the airbag warning light does not function as is should i.e. it should come on and go off within approx 5 secs of the vehicle starting.
