Disc Protectors / Guards

Are the guards behind the brake discs (front and rear) particuarly functional? Would you get on okay without them? Also, would you get through an MOT without them fitted?

I'd be interested to know if people are running with/without these as surely most peoples' original sets must be pretty corroded and swiss-cheese like by now?

Took them all off the sprint car as they were knackered, no harm done.

Can't see how it would effect the mot... More likely to fail with corroded sharp edges, mine have been taken off as part of recur ing suspension.

Took them off years ago - never had an issue with MOT

Took mine of years ago, meant to help with cooling also.

Most makes/models that I have dealt with seem to have them

To keep grit from getting jammed between disc & pad perhaps ?

Cooling ducts on my front ones are getting ragged

Will probably remove my guards when the chance presents itself

Cooling will probably be improved without them I think

Will be removing mine when I get the chance as they are rather holey.
If anyone is interested, they are still available from Toyota at £29.80+ VAT each (front and rear are the same price).

Out of interest, to remove the guards is it just a matter of taking off the disc first, or is it more involved? (i.e. removing hubs etc.)

The hole in the middle of the protector won't fit over the hub, but it's only a minute with a chisel to cut through the narrowest bit of the protector to get it off

I got the cutters on mine and ripped them off, its only soft metal.

I'm fairly sure when I did my MK1a to 1b front brake conversion, I just cut them off - had no problems with grit / stones getting stuck in against the pads.
