Advice needed

Post by PHIL666 »

Im after some advice!

I have a Rev 3 MR2 G-limited that has been off the road for just over a year. It was never sold due to being stored at parents house In North Devon (and partly because I couldnt bare to part with it!) The time has come for it to be moved from there and I therefore find myself torn between:

Scrapping it and selling off parts to get a small amount of money.

Putting it through an MOT and potentially having to spend lots due to it having been sat for a year.

Or try selling as a "project" car.

Naturally its market value is not a huge amount, and just looking through parts pages on here and on ebay suggests that plenty of others have been scrapped for parts and there is no shortage of second hand bits around.

Any guidance from those in the know about these things would be gratefully recieved. Details below to give an idea of situation.

Rev 3 G-Limited
Dark green (6M1)
68,000 miles
body work all in good order (except minor stone chips etc)
white line anti roll bars

Hopefully I can gain an idea of what the best course of action is :D

Thanks in advance
Phil.

Find someone local to you that can "pre-mot"on the car at your house, local newspapers are good to find someone.

You can then get an good idea of whats needed to make the car roadworthy and it wont cost alot. :thumleft:

I would then report back here with whats needed and we can advise on cost of parts, repair etc.

Lewis.

+1

You need to assess how much it will cost to get road worthy and then make your decision :thumleft:

He will have to insure the car to take it for a MOT.

If he gets someone to come to him and check the car its cost him nothing but the check.

You use the word stored so I,m assuming the car was garaged? If so then there wont be a lot of change in a yr from what you parked up!!
Brake discs will of suffered probably and hopefully you didn,t leave hand brake on? Annoying one is the tyres they can go egg shaped, carefully work the suspension th first time as the seals can jam and travel with the strut!! Before you start her up drop some fresh oil in the top, remove king lead and give her a few cranks. Quick check of all ya rubbers - bushes etc and off ya go!! :thumleft:

call me a nutter but i always sigh when i see these posts. i hate to see a good car getting broke. id personally spend every penny i have getting it on the road again and enjoy the car, there great to drive. :thumleft:

but like said get it checked and if it realy isnt in your budget , then sell it on.

look at it this way. the car has cost you nothing so far. as you already have it.. if it costs you a few hundred to get it right. then you have a great car for a couple of hunderd quid.

its a no brainer to me..

Id like a look at it as a project.

When you say stored im guessing outside and was that it just stored Handbrake on and not started or moved the whole time?

Thanks for the advice so far,

The car has been garaged for the vast majority of the time but has had brief spells outside. It has been moved every now and again to rotate tyres etc, and has been left with handbrake off.
Unfortunately it was never intended to be stored for so long, the situation dictated that I needed a larger car and only had space for one.....therefore the MR2 had to go! In hind sight trying to sell it from a remote area in North Devon was a poor decision!
I tend to agree with you redmr89 I would hate to see a good car broken for spares (especially as I drive something far more dull on a daily basis instead :( ) I will get a proper assessment over the weekend and make a decision

+ another for keeping it, i bought a 1973 mk 1 escort from a mate of mine as it was tax exempt and wanted a cheap car to get me to work as my fiesta rs turbo was getting ruined,
i paid £300 for it i knew the numberplate was worth more than that so i knew i was onto a winner anyway car was also fitted with a 1750 burtons engine which was very quick , the car sat outside his flat for a year and a half as he didnt have funds to put it on the road,
i took my jump start box, a gallon of petrol, and some wd40 with me to his flat popped off dizzy cap checked that gave a spray of wd40 done same with leads and took spark plugs out and gave them a clean,
popped some petrol down the carb and turned the ignition after a couple of turns it fired up bit of coughing and spluttering but when warm it was fine, was expecting the clutch to be seized but was fine also brakes were stuck but after driving backwards and forwards thay released, my mate then drove it to my house this was a saturday,
the following day i jacked up car and put it on axel stands and went from front to back checking all suspension and chassis rails etc, had some rusty brake pipes which i rubbed down and painted bit of surface rust on floor and bits nice splash of hamerite sorted that out, i gave the calipers some wd40 and got them working much better and noticed a few loose bolts on suspension and some missing split pins, a couple of tyres had rotted so got 2 part worns,
monday morning came and took car for mot after a very scary 35 mins guy said that the car is fine and passed and was suprised how clean it was underneath, i also told him how long it had sat and what i paid for it he said i had a result, £55 i paid for mot and tyres insurance was £130 on a classic policy i drove the car round my mates flat and showed him he was gutted, he thought it was going to cost loads to put on the road bear in mind car was outside for the whole time not in a garage.

sorry for such long story but sometimes things are not as bad as thay seem, i bought a cheap nova for wife once engine was covered in oil, wife had a heart attack when she see the engine, i bought it she said are you mad on way home i popped into garage and steam cleaned engine with a can of gunk and popped into cheap spares shop got a rocker cover gasket and put on, oil leak cured she had that car for 2 and half years it never broke down and always started first time even in winter and was very quick for a 1.2

go on give it a go dont break it for spares. :thumleft: :thumleft: :thumleft:
she's all comming together nicely now after a fair bit of cash spent, not bad for just an n/a now for some body kit i think.

thanks :) it didnt have massive whale tails and 6 inch tailpipes out the back, all i done was put some calibra wheels i had left over from my old calibra and smartened it up,
my wife loved that car i remember one bad winter when her car was the only one round the school all her other friends cars wouldnt start and were a lot newer,
the petrol used to last forever aswell if your talking bad cars ive had 3 xr3i's now thats bad and worse of all one was a convertable [-X . ive had so many cars i had a bmw 323i only had it 2 weeks i found it boring it was imaculate made £200 on it though, i used to change my cars sometimes 3 times a year. :thumleft: :thumleft: :thumleft:
