Re: the WORST modification thread
It looks horrendous, granted..!
But if you look, the filter is actually in some sort of shrouding OUTSIDE the engine cover, so it will (probably) be getting a good supply of cold air.....?
Better in principle than bolting a JR to the TB......
I'd like to see a pic with the engine cover closed..

above the engine cover is a bit of a dead zone airflow wise though so it might actually be starving the filtre of air
Re: the WORST modification thread
Actually it looks as though he's only cut into the lower skin of the engine bay cover, and it isn't actually a hole going though. It's just given enough space to accommodate the filter in the engine bay, but the filter doesn't extend out of the bay. So it will not be getting outside air - from what I can tell from that picture.
And even if it did - he's cut extra holes at the front of the engine bay panel (with some meshing on them). If the filter did extend to the outside again, he probably would be getting a feed of air to it due to these cut outs, but some of it will be the warm air from the engine...

Re: the WORST modification thread
Interesting arrangement......
Looking a bit closer, it looks like the top of the filter is not really protruding much above the level of the engine cover, anyway..?
Maybe half in/ half-out?
Now the guy's either a bodger.....or he's done some tests......
I'm siding with the former.....but as I said, a pic of it with the engine cover closed will wrap it up.......

Nope - you can see through the hole to the reflection in the rear window.
My vote is for him being a bodger - never mind the warm air from the engine bay being drawn in, when the car is moving the area behind the rear window is in a low pressure area, exactly the opposite of what you want for the engine air intake.

I think this answers it...

I don't think that would be the case in this instance. The restrictions to flow from the engine bay and under the car to the 'dead space' have been significantly reduced, so I reckon there would be far more equalisation of pressure accross the engine lid. (IYSWIM)
Anyhoo my nomination for worst mod has to be the electric supercharger or ebay resistor.
Re: the WORST modification thread
That mod looks almost as good as the one my mate did to his Nova SR about nine years ago - how does a Webber carb glued onto the bonnet sound to you?? Bet he got maximum airflow there...

Hehe, that was a classic nova mistake, putting on a weber carb and trying to close the bonnet... and making an air-filter shape in it
I don;t think you mean glued literally... just very close? I had the same set up in mine, and it was very quick (well comparable to an aw11 due to being much lighter)
I think the whole cold air feed obsession is misguided... it makes a very minor difference but not worth cutting holes or removing headlamps!
PS I use the std mk1 ducting intake in my mk1.5, with no problems!

Re: the WORST modification thread
isnt standard mk1b intake better than any aftermarket system?
It looks to me like it has a ram air effect from pick-up in side scoop.
I agree about sleepy eyes, they always look like headlamps are broken.

Re: the WORST modification thread
i bet on a dry day thats not a bad mod the air outside the engine bay has GOT to be colder, BUT WHAT HAPPENS WHEN IT RAINS (Everyday in england)

there are worse things you can do!!!
Re: the WORST modification thread
Now, thats going to be far better than the white one.......
Same principle...but just done properly.........
At least it has a fair sized intake, and will actually feed air to the engine bay / intake (whatever)......
I did however see a similar sort of thing: I think it was on a white Mk1.....where the intake resembled the Loch Ness monster in the old pix.......!
I cant find the pic of the car, but this is the LNM pic to which I refer:

Sorry about link length......
