Hi all, cambelt in my 1988 aw11 needs changing, but im told unless you know what your doing dont try So was wondering if anyone in the thurrock area is confident with changing cambelts would mind popping round and giving me a hand, im sure I can sort a crate of beer out if you like. Thank you in advance.
Good to know of another Thurrock Member!
I can't help with the cambelt change, but if all else fails Westfield Motors in Rayleigh are very knowledgeable about all Toyota's (they are a Toyota & Lexus specialist) and might be worth a thought.
If you know where Makro is, they are literally around the corner from there.

ow yeah course, didnt think about that. Thats not to sad then if i get it wrong, might give it a go myself then, im told you definatly need a ramp, is that true?
Where abouts in thurrock you from blue? I have never seen a mk1 on the road anywhere?
You don't need ramps (I am thinking the ones one would reverse up onto). I found axle stands best for a DIY as you can get the O/S rear wheel off which will help with access.
If you have access to a ramp (hydrolic type found in garages) that lift the whole car, it makes life somewhat easier.
Axle stands will be fine, theres no need to get under the car when doing a cambelt. Was the first job i ever done on my mk1 and was abit of a pain but nothing to hard.

I'm in Grays, although the MK1 only comes out at weekends and if I have holiday from work or a space right at work in the office car park as it's safe there.
Where abouts are you? I've seen two MK1's in a week up near Romford, but that's it - haven't seen any others locally at all.
Do you take yours out much?

You might have seen mine nr Romford, Midnight blue, almost looks black, with Superedition decals and there is a white t bar just around the corner to me.
Dont be scared about doing the cambelt - im in the process of doing mine for the first time and it has been relatively straight forward - the most difficult thing is getting stubborn bolts undone lol
I have found the haynes manual and the BGB very useful and of course imoc - theres always somebody who has done it before you and they are more than willing to help

Thanks - i made some more progress with mine today,
Sorry the Big Green Book - the manual that toyota use, there are loads of copies floating around, but if you havent got one the haynes is just as useful if you need step by step guidance - i couldnt have done mine without it

Yep I am pretty certain they were a blue and a white one, it was so long ago but I think the Blue one was near Cherry Tree and the white one was oncoming to me just past the elm park turning, where there is a school and a pretty sharp-ish corner where the limit drops from 40 to 30 coming away from Romford. I wish I knew names of roads!
PPRE89 - yep a lil mini meet sounds good, infact 4 MK1's (inc. us) are going to the classic car show at Barleylands this weekend
