How many people are actually going?

Stuart - looks like 9 cars at the moment with 10 or 11 people - I've edited the first post in this thread to list who is expected to be coming along.

OK, I think I've got 3 takers for the Hotel in Koblenz - we need at least 2 more to get a group of 5 before its worth having a word with them to negotiate a discount, but the more people we get together the better!

Put me down for a room Ben, I won't book it until you confirm whether you are going for the group discount!

FWIW, it looks very likely that I'll be heading over on the 24th-27th June. Once I have confirmed this, anyone who wanted to come along that couldn't manage Ben's trip is welcome to join me.

Rog, I'm very tempted - Have you booked a hotel yet?

:thumright:

OK, great - I'll give them a ring and see what kind of deal they may be able to cut us, compaired to the Internet rate quoted. I've got staying at the hotel:

Mark & Lauren
Ben
Si
Stuart
Dom

Which is the magic 5 we need IMO - I'll update this with more names as people sign up...

<edit - fixed typo>

I say Old Boy - I think that's a tad harsh  It was at altitude, I'd had nothing to eat, was dehydrated and had been boarding most of the day when I nearly fell off the bench and lost the power of speech - and I'm not used to drink O:)

Fancy a spot of breakfast? We could sit outside.... :pukel:

Dragging this back on thread (c: I'm wondering about what to take with me in the way of tools and the like... A set of spanners  , a jack, tyre weld and a spare set of front and rear brake pads  plus the usual bits you'll need for driving abroad - spare bulb kit, warning triangle, fire extinguisher and first aid kit. Anything else people have found useful?

Cheers,
Si.

I would dearly love to go to this....

I really really really would... I can afford it, but three problems:

1) Pretty unsure if my Two's Insurance would be enough over there. Can someone clarify what level of cover I need etc

2) My GF is Chinese and is on a VISA here so it's very very hard for her to travel to another country.... If she can't come, I can't.... Anyone have any experiences of travel to another Europe Country if you're on a VISA here?

3) Newbie with no track experience.... Not really a problem, just the final break on the whole plan :(

Have fun guys.... Wish I was there.

Si i've been trying to work out a list of things to take too.

I never thought about taking spare pads but that seems like a good idea just incase.

I've got some questions too if anyone could answer them please.

Toolwise do you think it'll be best each taking our own or all taking different tools?
Am I right that a GB bit on you numberplate is ok and you don't need one of them stickers?
Is it necessary/recommended to have one of those E111 forms?

Has anybody booked the ferry yet, if so which one? or can I assume that if I book first others will follow the same one?

for ferry bookage see Ben's post as we will all be booking that one.

GB on your no plate is fine, you only need it on the rear.

E111 is a good idea tbh.

Toolwise i'm sure most will take relevant trackday stuff ie tyre press guage, pump, socket set and random tools, oil etc.

Hi,
I can help with 1 and 3, but sorry I have no experience of 2....

1. Insurance on the 'ring itself is curious... By the letter of the law it is a one way mostly unrestricted toll road. I say mostly - there are two sections with speed limits, both are exit/entry points so it's a sensible idea - I think they do Police those limits - or at least I've been told they do. It really is a matter of reading the fine print of your insurance documents (all of them  ) or if you're going to be up-front about it - a word in their ear usually suffices - but tell them you want the phone conversation recording - it helps if the 'orrible should happen.

3. If you can get some track experience before going it's often touted as a good idea. My first ever lap of the 'ring was in fairly heavy rain with standing water with a very long gap between then and my last track day. I know others may disagree but personally I don't see much of my track driving style on the 'ring so I wonder if it really is that much of a help. I'll throw the car around on the track but the 'ring is absoltely not a place to do that, maybe 7/10ths at the 'ring for me is enough. What is a help is eyes in the back of your head and an awareness of where other vehicles are and what they're doing - something that I have picked up from track driving and every day driving. Remember on the 'ring it's a public toll road so you'll see allsorts on there (motorbikes, busses, etc.).

There are a few track days coming up, TOC is in early May (I believe) and there's our own IMOC day which is way off in September. TOC is £99 for a driver, I think passengers and second drivers are extra. Could you both come over to Bruntingthorpe for the TOC day?

Cheers,
Si.

I've always found a pair of brown trousers to be useful when having a passenger lap with Ben!

Lauren,

Get the Ferry booked now I'd say - I've not had chance to speak to the Hotels about a discount as things have been a bit busy at work and home - but I'll try to speak to them later this week and get back to you :)

LoL - I do a good guided tour of the better gravel traps around Donnington ;)

At the Nurburgring I'm well behaved in comparison, its not a place to take liberties really !

Its a public one way toll road so normal insurance should cover it. However, check your doucments carefully as in some policies it is explicitly excuded. If in doubt, ring your insurers and be up front about it, and send them a letter confirming your understanding.

2) My GF is Chinese and is on a VISA here so it's very very hard for her to travel to another country.... If she can't come, I can't.... Anyone have any experiences of travel to another Europe Country if you're on a VISA here?

Can't help here I'm afraid - can the Chinese Embassy in the UK advise?

That's not a problem, you're not expected to do quick laps. I've seen family estates going around with dogs in the boot, as well as large busses with 50+ passengers gawping out of the window.

Basically, drive it at the speed you're comfortable doing - and not any faster. Get a few passenger laps with those who have been before to get a feel for the layout, and try some laps following someone else around so they can show you the lines around the circuit.

There's also the experience of being there, chatting to other people there and talking about cars and bikes in the car park ..

Remeber though, the ring is a fun place, but IMHO isn't somewhere to push right to the very limit.

I really enjoy driving it at 8/10ths, and as a rule of thump don't get the car out of shape at all.

Never has a truer word been spoken...first timers please note.

Insurance / I was covered when I had my accident and they paid out after a struggle over the amount but recently enquiring with Aon my REX is not covered for the Ring. Note the documentation doesnt say a word you have to check. After many claims in recent years many Ins Cos will not cover the Ring.
