Can someone please explain HTF you convert an IC into a CC!!?

As quoted a couple of posts above. Its a serious question, no a flippant response- Im interested.

You dont really make a intercooler a chargecooler, you use it as a heat exchanger, basically a radiator too cool the water that flows through the actually chargecooler.

Like people use a ST205 chargecooler on the mr2 and use the stock intercooler as the heat exchanger by modifying the inlet and outlet ports smaller to connect water pipes.

I personally dont think its a great method using the stock intercooler when you can fit a nice big exchanger in the front.

A/W is ok if you want to keep things compact, but I prefer boot mount, less weight and less to go wrong, and excellent if not better performance than a A/W, personal preference tho :D

I see- so the IC acts in the same way as a radiator would do?

While I was waiting to see what it was, I did wonder if it involved 'boxing up' the intercooler, and filling the box up with the coolant, on the basis that if its air tight, its water tight!

Less beers for me I think, and good luck with the build.

Your not entirely wrong, you could always weld a water jacket to the intercooler and therefore make it a charge cooler, im sure modern designs are pretty well put together tho and would be much mroe effective than doing what I just mentioned.

I have a friend who builds drag race beetles, not my cup of tea but he welds water jackets to the air cooler engines to make them water cooled.

Thats pretty interesting! I have a couple of bike rads I was going to run in tandem up the front (or get a big old radiator off something), and may look at modifying my IC- I have one of those XS power ones, but also a spare standard.

If I actually get round to doing something, I will upate this post - would rather have a CC in the standard IC position rather than on top of the engine.

Intercooler conversion

FastGrant,

Thats right. It involves boxing the Greddy intercooler thus it becomes a chargecooler. I had the Greddy already so it was cheaper than buying the radtech system. It cost very little to do.

Instead of using the fiat rad at the front which took up so much room, we built a smaller rad because we would no longer have such a major problem with the heat above the engine!

Im actually really getting into this idea. I have two motorbike rads given to me, which I was going to run in parallel at the front.

I dont have ready access to welders over here (Jersey), but a wondering what I can get away with to box up an IC? I will have to see how thick the IC is. I have also noted that its not so much the core of the IC that gets hot, as the ends (intake and output), so important to seal those in too.

I still have my original IC if all else fails, which is a lot smaller, and would fit in lots of things.

So that just leaves the pump and piping to get, which is very achievable.
