Hi All

Is there anyone local to oxford who has a rev1 turbo with a standard ecu in place that would be able to help me and Jeremy out for testing one night next week.

Please let me or jeremy know asap

I am willing to sort out petrol money but not for someone from scotland

On the mapping front, I'd expect the best of the mappers out there to get to grips with it quickest, so initially I'd imagine that 2bartuning and the dyno near Jeremy to be ones to start with until it spreads.

Don't forget, you can invest in this as it's plug-and-play and then worry about expensive mapping later. It's the solution I am excited about, since it's much easier to get a few hundred quid together here and there but HARD to get £1000 in 1 place at 1 time.

This is a really interesting project.

I just have a quick question, it might sound daft so please bear with me and let me know if im talking a load of rubbish.

Anyway, if you captured plenty of data using this would there be a way for it to tune the afr ratio to a preset safe level?

Im simply thinking of the tuning potential within safe limits for us people that dont know much about tuning the ecu.

Thanks

You would install this ECU which is plug-n-play with stock toyota maps. You'd then take it to professional tuning people who will hook up a lambda sensor and DET cans and they would adjust the ECU maps in line with the data from their sensors. This will improve the performance, reliability and miles per gallon of your engine, ensuring at all point under all driving conditions you ECU is giving the correct instructions to the engine.

Here's a couple of screenshots from the real time tuning GUI

This software works great but is still under development so it looks a bit untidy in layout.

Also some things aren't cal'd yet, eg coolant and air temps and also the boost indicator (PIM). These indicate in hex at the minute and the values should be ignored for now.

One shot shows the ECU when it is in closed loop on the fuel map. The fuel trim (big yellow dot) shows how hard the ECU is trying to keep the fuelling at 14.7:1.

When the yellow dot appears (and the yellow text) then you know the ECU is in closed loop.

The little oval shapes below the fuel trim are the narrowband o2 sensor status. One oval lights when weak and the other when rich. When in closed loop these indicators swap back and forth as the ECU hunts each side of the ideal fuel ratio. They both go off when in open loop as in the second table.

the other shows the ign map during open loop. I've injected a knock signal to the ECU and you can see it backing off the timing by 4.5 degrees.

All this stuff runs fluidly in real time, eg the blue rpm bar and the red load bar move smoothly as you rev the engine. The idea is to tune the rpm and load to get a zero on the site target before you tune the cell in the map table.

The GUI tracks the ECU as the engine is revved so the highlighted cell whizzes round the map table as you blip the throttle.

Note:This data was taken with the ECU plugged into a simulator rather than a real MR2. It should perform just the same on a real car.

The AFR reading is an aux input to the board which allows datalogging of a AFRmeter. It's set up to read the meter of a local tuner and has a range of 7.35:1 to 22.35:1

Note that on the second table the tracked cell isn't highlighted green. This was just bad luck on the screen capture as the cell flickers green/white to catch the eye. It captured the screen when the cell flickered white rather than green...

Also note that this is a JDM rev1 ECU. There are indicators on the GUI to show TVIS and TVSV status.

This is really looking like a cracking piece of kit.

As far as making the interface look better im sure there are a few graphics designers on here that will help out.

Would you be able to measeure oil temp?

The board has 6 aux datalogger inputs that can be datalogged alongside the ECU data.
These accept 0 to 5V inputs so you could hook up to thermistors for stuff like oil temperature, or a wideband o2 sensor, or you could log oil pressure or exhaust gas temps via a thermocouple.

As you can see I'm not that good at creating snazzy graphics. I'm afraid that the final product will look pretty similar to what you see above. :(

IMO it just has to be functional, and I've tried to put all the important tuning stuff in one corner of the screen to minimise eye fatigue when tuning. That's why it looks a bit cluttered at first.

I've got experience of tuning on a rolling road and you really do need to make the interface as efficient as possible. If the tuner has to keep his eyes darting across the display to gather info then he will soon get tired.

I'll also add hotkeys to allow tuning via the keyboard.

There are loads of other maps in the ECU that can be tweaked so there will be extra menus added for this in the future.

Any suggestions from tuners for improving the layout will be welcome.

Sorry i was thinking along the line of people maybe using the datalogging side of things on something like a carputer. Maybe something just to show some useful info such as oil temp via as you said an aux port, mpg etc simply while driving.

Kind of something that could be used instead of the gauges you can buy.

On one of the german mr2 sites someone created a full digital dash that displayed speed, revs + tons of more info. Think it was using obdII.

I wouldn't worry too much about the graphics dude. Just as long as it is functional and everything you need for mapping is on the screen I don't think anyone would complain.

Perhaps that is something you could upgrade at a later stage via email if you feel the need?

Think you guys misunderstand - the guy is asking if for the purposes of in-car monitoring whilst driving around, will there be a pretty fancy display to show you some data.

When mapping, then function over form; obviously :)

probably too much to ask, but perhaps an interface to pocket pc could be made up, so you could switch maps and view stats etc, pocket pc`s are cheap as chips and would be a cheaper alternative to a carputer (lot less weight and power consumption too)

ooops my bad! should of read back, well that would be pretty cool and alot more cost effective than a carputer, you can do most things on a pda, top stuff :thumleft:
