I need to know this too. We really want to convoy down with some others as its more fun that way. So we need to nail down ferry times, what and where etc.

ASAP too.

I'm definately going still.

Just waiting to hear where everyone is definately planning on stopping with details so I can book it.

If we get it arranged i'd be up for a convoy, i'd not be bothered which port we crossed from.

Def NOT the most convenient place to be if you want to get to the Ring for early morning laps

Hey, is that you Chris? How's things going down under? :)

Accomodation is proving a serious PITA to arrange. Because of the Truck Grand Prix that weekend, all of the local hotels near to Nurburg are already booked up, I've been in touch with over 10.

Even hotel at Hohe Acht is covenient for laps although it is a little out of the way for food and drinks in the evening

Yeah, tried them even - they've gone bust from what I can tell. Booking in there was the original Plan B...

It seems you will all be doing a little more driving to and from the Ring but if they are nice roads it just adds to the experience - just no walking around Nurburg for evening fun or trip to The Dorint for an Eifelgeist experience

Yep, we can do that if the ring closes or take a trip to the Museum / castle etc - if we're staying in Koblenz there will be plenty of good Restaurants and bars for the evening :D

OK - here's the plan:

Getting there

Probably the best way to do this is work back from arriving at Nurburg at say 4pm on Friday. I'm already going to be in France/Germany then, so I won't be in the convoy travelling over to the 'ring.

Autoroute says its about 5 hours of driving from Calais - so given that you'll need to stop for fuel and coffee/food, plus there may be a little slow traffic en-route near Brussels you're looking at about 7 hours from when you set off from Calais. I'll post details of a suggested route later with maps.

Realistically, to get to the 'ring for 4pm means you need to take a ~7am boat from Dover which gets you into France just after 9am. 7 hours of travelling should get you through France, Belgium and into Germany an on to Nurburg for 4pm comfortably, allowing for a little slow traffic around the Brussels ring road.

Ferry Crossings

Out : I'd suggest a 7am Seacat crossing, aiming to get you over into France for 9am. When I last checked you could still book this for £99.

Back : I'd suggest going for a 6pm or 7pm ferry home, providing you don't have too far to drive back in the uk. This allows you to stop for a couple of hours in Calais to head to the supermarkets or Wine/Beer places to stock up

To book, try:

http://www.ferrysavers.com
http://www.speedferries.com

I've booked in the past with Ferrysavers and haven't had any problems. Speederries is a new outfit offering very cheap crossings - worth considering, but you've got an extra 30 miles to drive back up from Boulogne to Calais.

If people are on different crossings, I'd suggest the best place to meet up is the first services you come to after you've crossed over into Belgium - its a relatively new services, just after Junction 3 on the Belgian side of the road. You should aim to be there for 10am - its about 40 minutes drive from Calais.

Friday on Track

The Track is shown as opening at 5.15pm on Friday and should be quiet as it is a weekeday evening, allowing you to do some steady laps to re-familiarise yourself with the circuit and anything that may have changed since you were last there.

I realise there are a few of you are travelling a good distance in the UK to get to Dover. If this is the case you could stay overnight on Thursday at the Travel Lodge at Maidstone Services on the M20 - that is only about 30 minutes from the ferries or Tunnel. Alternatively, if you crossed Hull - Zebrugge you could meetup on the E40 at the first services after Brussels at between 12 and 1pm.

Accommodation

Accommodation-wise, Koblenz is currently looking to be the only option. I've checked hotel prices, and if you book online it works out at around £35-37 (after a small discount) a night for bed, breakfast and parking in a hotel that apparently is in the town centre. Its the same one as the folks used for the TOC trip at Easter.

Its about a 30-35 minute drive from there to Nurburg and back. I'd certainly recommend getting to the 'ring first thing in the morning when the track opens as it is quiet - this would mean an early start of about 7.30 from Koblenz to get to Nurburg.

I'll post up the details of how to book up the hotel later, and let you all book yourselves in there - I appreciate others may want to stay at the campsite in Nurburg as it is closer/cheaper - there's no problem with that.

Toni! Nooo! Its a question of priorities ... you've got to come with us to the 'ring.

Yes, it will be the 8-11th.

There's a chance we may go again later in the year but its not 100% sure.

I'll post the direct link to the online booking page for the hotel - if I can't do that, I'll tell you how to navigate to get there - details to follow later this afternoon.

Hi Ben

Yes it's me, all the way from down under and left a bit or maybe right a bit

Nice country, great weather, fantastic twisty roads in places

Loads of imports to choose from but few MR2s

Good luck with sorting your IMOC group to cross the Channel AND meet up in Germany - I know organising a group can be hell

My next group for Easter 2006 may include people from USA/NZ and Oz so I may have one hell of a co-ordinating job

And as for instructing people for meeting up to travel across Erope in a convoy..................................better you than me

Have fun but if I can give advice on this Forum re Ring visits, for the next trip, find empty hotels before fixing a date

Saves on all your current messing about to get people in the same hotel

Re future trips, check my other posts about an Aug or Sept visit

If I get there, will I see you and Si and Dom and others?

Good to see that you are planning to make a number of visits to tarmac heaven in 2005

I may not get there this year although I am trying to make it in Aug or Sept

In Aug when it is the OldTimer Grand Prix or pehaps a later date in Sept - travel Fri then track open half of Sat/all day Sun/half day Mon - for less traffic

If it is possible it would be nice to see some of the usual suspects and visit the Dorint for the Eifelgeist

Maybe Roger might have an extra trip/replacement trip in Sept when you and a few others may be around

Let me know if you're going out in September and October, definately interested - especially one weekend that isn't rammed with people!
How many laps do you need to do before it's worth investing in a Jahreskarte, about 60? hmmm! :-k

Ben: Have you got your turbo'd Mk3 now? Whats it like?

Ferry Details : Speedferries return for £68, Hoverspeed for £69 -Book by end of April

Folks - Just FYI, Here are Crossing prices. Hoverspeed and Speed Ferries seem to have a bit of a price war on at the mo - book your ticket before the end of April and returns are under £70 which is a very good price.

Note - Speed Ferries to Boulogne rather than Calais. Factor in that its 30 miles further down the cost than Calais which alters the timings a little.

You're looking for a 7am (ish) boat out on the 8th and I'd say around a 18:00 boat back on the 11th

Operator: HOVERSPEED

Dover-Calais £69.00 Amendment charges
Vessel: Sea Cat Friday 8/7/2005 departing at
Monday 11/7/2005 departing at

ESTRICTIONS: 2005 HOVERSPEED SPECIAL 5 DAY RETURN FARE. Return within 120 hours of arrival at your destination port. This is a promotional fare and may be withdrawn without notice. Book by 11th April 2005.

And for comaprision, here is the price via http://www.speedferries.com - Crossing at 7.45 out and 17:30 back - they only have limited sailings in a day.

8.7.2005 07:45 Dover / Boulogne SpeedOne 8.7.2005 09:35
11.7.2005 17:30 Boulogne / Dover SpeedOne 11.7.2005 17:20

Price so far: £ 68,00

Please book your own crossings to suit your own timing travelling over.

Hotel details to follow shortly ..

Yep, depending on how things go, I may be up for a second trip later in the year. Looking at the Nurburgring Calendar though, there no full weekends in September :?

The only potential weekend I can see working is around Friday 16th, returning on Tuesday 20th. The track is only open on the afternoons of Friday (from 2pm) and Saturday (from 1.15pm), all day Sunday and Monday afternoon from 1pm - back on Tuesday I guess?

How many laps do you need to do before it's worth investing in a Jahreskarte, about 60? hmmm! :-k

Yeah, I've worked out the breakeven is about 50 laps usually. If you're going to make more than 2 trips with more than 2 days on the track it is worth it - but I probably won't bother this year and just buy 12 lap tickets instead - that should work out equal cost.

Ben: Have you got your turbo'd Mk3 now? Whats it like?

Ah, you're ahead of the game - I need a Roadster first! I've been spending the last few weekends going to see cars. Most of the Private sale cars have been hugely overpriced, and to be honest in poor condition with damage to bodywork - its really fustrating when you've travelled a few hours to see a 'mint' car and find its more of a dog :(

But, things are on the up - I may have located a car - I'm off to see it this weekend.

I do have a PE Turbo/ Chargcooler/ Unichip (fueling and boot) to fit to the car when I find the right one.

I've also got some uprated suspension to fit too - the last thing I'm thinking of getting are some uprated pads but I may stick with the standard ones for the moment..

Hotel Options

OK, I've made some calls to hotels in Koblenz, and it looks like it will either be the Ibis or Mercure hotel that we're staying at in Koblenz.

Prices have crept up £10 since I last ran through a 'test' reservation, but for a single room for one person from Friday 8th through to Monday 11th both seem to be coming out at 192 Euros, ie. about £130 for 3 nights.

Both hotels have public car parking beneeth/ nearby (no private parking I'm afraid) and the car parks are locked overnight from 11pm to 7am.

The Ibis is a 'budget' hotel normally (think 2 or 3* / Travel Lodge) and the Mercure is actually a 4* hotel. So given that the Mercure is the same price, we might as well stay there ? Apparently its got a 'sky bar' overlooking the city - sounds like a great place to swap stories about the day's driving(!)

Both are located in the City Centre:

The Mercure hotel :
http://www.accorhotels.com/accorhotels/ ... otel.shtml

The Ibis :
http://www.accorhotels.com/accorhotels/ ... otel.shtml

(yes, they're part of the same hotel group)

If we get more than 5 of us intending to stay in one of these, I'll see if I can arrange a discount for us over the online Internet price

So if you're OK with the above prices, post an OK here ...

I'm sure you can fix that Chris. Did you take your VR4 in the end, or have you got something else 'interesting' to drive - I hear Holden V8s are a popular choice in your neck of the woods

Good luck with sorting your IMOC group to cross the Channel AND meet up in Germany - I know organising a group can be hell

Cheers - all I'm doing is suggesting suitable dates / times and getting an outline plan together - people will need to book their own ferry crossings, hotels etc. Hopefully someone from the group travelling over on the 8th will be up for convoying over.

My next group for Easter 2006 may include people from USA/NZ and Oz so I may have one hell of a co-ordinating job

Nah, just tell them to be at the Motorsport hotel on Friday evening and get them to bring an 'interesting' car ;-)

And as for instructing people for meeting up to travel across Erope in a convoy..................................better you than me

Heh - I'm actually planning just to meet folks at the circuit on the Friday - I'm sure they can find their way there.

Re future trips, check my other posts about an Aug or Sept visit

Ditto my posts - There aren't any full weekends in September, just 3 half days and a full day which could make a week away. I probably won't make an August trip if I'm going in July, but September is a possibility ..

FWIW, it looks very likely that I'll be heading over on the 24th-27th June. Once I have confirmed this, anyone who wanted to come along that couldn't manage Ben's trip is welcome to join me.

Ben, yes I like full w/e's but time off from work may be a prob

For Aug OldTime GP looks good but Sept better date for time off

Not certain which date looked best but as we both seem to have described - part open Sat/full Sun and half Mon - less traffic/stoppages on the Mon so could be better choice

Ben, if you notice by my posts I have an MR2 - a G-Ltd again
VR-4 was sold in UK for good money - even cheaper here so if we get a second car it may be 4WD/V6/Twin Turbo fun again! And some track days to enjoy - prepare me for my Ring trip - whenever that mught be

Roger - how are you fixed for Aug or even better in Sept? I think Rod also would consider Sept as described
