As a couple if peeps have previously stated, it really does depened on what you want from the car.
I have only owned mk2's, but have test driven mk1's.
The reason for buying a mk1 is for a drivers car. Bear in mind, it has probably done a fair few more miles due to age, so you might need to spend a bob or two.
Mk2 represents creature comforts and def straight line speed. I personally think its v gd through corners, but not a patch on a mk1.
If you buy a mk1, you may want a 2nd car for the motorway journeys to work. Mk2 is a little more versatile.
