Well it's an interesting car and (to me) an interesting ECU, Lauren :)

Assuming the ROM code is still mostly original Denso code I could probably tell from the binary file what the switches do.

My guess is that they switch in different ROM images because the 27C256 EPROM is capable of holding up to 8 versions of the factory ROM.

If you ever dump out the EPROM and email it to me I could probably work out 90% of the DIP switch functions within an hour or so of tracing each ROM image but I can't guarantee this.

i agree that it does seem to be a drop-in board, at a guess it would be a drop-in when running 264 cams as thats really the only mod that would require remapping to that extent.

Would also be nice to find out why after a week of driving we get this awful flat spot that gets worse until the ecu is reset.

The modded ecu is currently in the shed, we're preferring a stock ecu at the moment because it has a rev limit and doesn't have the flat-spot issue.

If you wanted to have a look at it your more than welcome, i could post it to you, but we would need it back in the same (working) condition. Just give us a shout if you fancy it.

Hi Mark
I'd much prefer it if you removed the EPROM yourself and simply emailed me the contents.

Because the ECU is so rare I'd really not recommend you send it to anyone by post (including me)

The most important component in that ECU is the 27C256 EPROM chip so I'd recommend you don't let it out of your possession until you know its contents.

I'd be willing to donate a few hours of my time (free) to try and help you decode the DIP switch functions but i don't want the responsibility of handling the original hardware.

Try and find someone local with an EPROM reader that can dump the EPROM contents. This has to be done by someone who can guarantee that their EPROM reader cannot go into WRITE mode by mistake.

eg my reader cannot WRITE because it cannot generate the voltage required for these functions.

The other thing to bear in mind is that the weakest link in that ECU is the ribbon cable interface between the two PCBs.

I assume you know this already but try and avoid any repeated flexing of this cable at the connectors because it isn't really designed for this.

So if someone does desolder the EPROM then it has to be done such that the two PCBS are held such that they don't hang loose during the desoldering and get 'wiggled' lots of times.

have no issue posting the ecu to you, i dont have or know anyone who has an eprom reader (other than you) i'm afraid

i'm sure though if it's in your hands you'd look after it!

I would have thought you would need to see the entire pcb to understand it's workings?

i cba to desolder it, if your interested in seeing it then your welcome to have a look.

Chances are we'll put a unichip on our stock ecu instead of using the modded one.

AE86 life tastic:

Had a bit of a chuckle this morning to myself. Got to the top of my road and a young-ish lad in a Civic that looked like it had been played with kindly let me out. As I'm going down the road in front of him, I look in my mirror and he's taking pictures of the car.

Anyway so I get a PM from the Fiat Forum this evening and this guy who I'm giving advice to about geo setup on his 100hp posted this pic up of me this morning!

Image

It must have been him then, driving the Civic!

Turns out the guy I was chatting to didn't take the pic, but it was a topic of discussion today on a FB group:

Anyway turns out it's Northwest Automotive and I'm going to pop along to a meet at Krispy Kreme (Trafford Centre) this Saturday at 7pm.

Amazing that this all started with someone taking pics of my car and the next thing I'm off to meet this lot!

I've stuck it up in the Events section if anyone else fancies popping along.

Probably best not to pursue it really because I don't really want to have the hardware here and you are going to fit the Unichip anyway :)

I could probably tell quite a bit about the hardware just from skimming through the code in the EPROM. But at some point I'd have to check which DIP switch was associated with which bit of code so someone would have to buzz out the connections at some point.

BTW can the latest Unichip do anything with the rev limiter settings? I thought that the regular Unichip couldn't do stuff like this.

Treated myself to a new rear plate as the one that was on there was just enormous and didn't fit in the JDM plate holder:

Went for 12x6":

In related news and especially for Craig, I turned the fog light round so it's up inside the bumper. Makes the rear end look much cleaner. :+:

Good work. Years ago, mine had a land rover disco plate on the rear and a UK plate on the front.

Quick call to craigsplates for a set of 13x6.5 Jap plates. Much better.

Good call on the fog, nice to see you listening to me :oldtongue:
