James - I can't find the test you describe where you run a power source through it, or in fact any igniter tests as this seems to relate only to the coil... Do you have any details? Here is the page from the BGB I'm using:

Sorry Nick, didnt see this post. The test I did was in relation to the 4age coil / igniter set up so could be different for the SW20. I dont have the SW20 workshop manual but are you sure it dosnt list a test for the igniter? Looking at the picture the igniter is the block at ontop of the coil.

Maybe I am wrong, been aaaages since I last looked over a Mr2.

I've just done a spark test as per BGB, disconnecting the HT lead that runs from igniter to dist. cap and cranking the engine. First time I did it I got one solid blue spark, then a weak orange one then nothing. Subsequent tests produced either one/two weak orange sparks or nothing at all. So I guess a new one is in order - I presume it's supposed to keep on sparking while cranking

You should get a repeated strong blue spark. The fact you were getting weak sparks, or none still to me suggests the igniter.

As mentioned I had something similar on the 86. All of a sudden the car just started playing up, missing under load, hanging revs and then wouldnt start and showed no spark. Got around it a few times by shorting the ECU out - not ideal but got the car running again.

Car came off the road shortly after that. Whe back together the car would run but was flat and sluggish then became hard to start and needed lots of cranking. Changed the igniter and the car was transformed, starts on the key and runs properly with no more flat running.

When the revs drop off does the engine stop / stumble? or is it just the counter that drops off?

Cheers

Hello mate,

Yes, I realise the error of my ways and can now tell the difference between the coil and igniter  - the power test seems to have been to check there is battery voltage at the + terminal of the coil with the ignition on, which there was when the car would start but I've not checked it since.

It feels like I have just taken my foot off the throttle and am coasting. No lumpyness or misfires, nothing except the tacho dropping to zero and no power being available.

Looks like the Royal mail has lost/delayed the igniter SBits sent but they are rushing me another one special delivery for tomorrow. If it arrives I guess I will know more over the weekend.

Sounds like a ignitior fault to me espically if the tacho is dropping as the is what sends a signal for the tacho.

Im sure James @TGT has loads of ignitors kicking around so might be best to pop in and try one.
