WET HEADLINING..... NOT ANYMORE !!!

Yes, no and yes..!

I totally removed the black part, undid the nuts and removed the broken stud mounts from their locations.

After drilling the holes in each end, I bolted them to the black section with machine screws: iirc, I had to file them down to around 4mm in length to get them in properly...I used nuts on the back, to ensure a decent fix...!

They were tiny M2's: I can send you some if you need them, as I'm sure i have some in a bag somewhere, along with the nuts...?

Actually, thinking back, I'm sure there was some Araldite used somewhere, too...but I cant remember where...!?

Probably to bond / seal everything after I'd bolted them on......?
(If in doubt...over-engineer it...!)

I got mine through my local Toyota dealer Rich

They had to order them from somewhere outside the UK

Following Greg's method which he explained above I seem to have made a breakthrough with my T-bar water leaks at last

The 4 bolts that hold the black central channel had all broken away (well known problem)

I recently removed the headlining and then the bolts

Only two were usable

I drilled the little crossbars and the central channel and re-fixed the bolts with tiny 2 mill screws

Only 2 of the bolts were in usable condition so fitted them to the front & back of the central channel

Was able to pull the channel down with them so the central edges of the glass panels compress the rubber seals properly

It was absolutely hissing down t'other night and NO WATER leak from the T-bar area at all

What a relief that is

Yes, lots of little screws with very rusty heads I imagine BD ?

Some of mine from the seal retainers were so rusted that I had to cut a slot in the head to remove them

Are the bolts broken away from the central glass channel on yours ?

They were!

Its completely stripped now though, i lost a few plastic inserts in the process but i should be able to sort a solution to that!

i will be happy when i am at the point of refitting that though... a long way to go before i get there!

Hopefully you can still get the plastic inserts from Mr T

They had to send for some for me (from the depot in Europe I think)

As you know, there are two types, square and rounded ends

Like some other Mk1 bits they may be becoming difficult to obtain

So I'm planning on doing this in the next couple of weeks while the weather looks good. I don't have a garage so a bit scared that I don't get the job done in a day but hey ho - can always use some plastic sheeting if needed!

Does anyone have the exact number of pegs needed?? I count 8 per side, plus around another 8 for the centre bar. A total of 24, is that right?

I don't want to take the headlining off as that sounds a major hassle and mine is in good condition but I am tempted to fix the rust and respray the part above the windscreen while I'm in the area. I'm hoping that leaving the headlining on will save me a few hours.

My t-bar glass is a mess of ugly white silicon and one has a small crack in the plastic so might decide to replace those with new 2nd hand ones if this doesnt fix the leak. Also quite a few people have mentioned the eccentric guides - worth getting? Anyone got a part number?

The plastic pegs are known by Mr T as grommets Paul

There are 3 for each panel across the middle

The ones across the middle are different to the ones at the front & back of the panel

I have both part numbers if you want them

When you remove the six screws in the middle of the roof you are likely to find that the channel with a black surface is loose & lifts off

That is a major cause of leaks & MUST be cured

And you need the headlining out to do that

Seems that they were fitted at the factory from new (perhaps only on late cars (mine is '89))

May be worth checking before ordering

Yes, there are no male eccentric guides on my car so far as I'm aware

Have never heard of them

Was referring to female eccentrics in my above posts

I have a leak but it comes in around the plastic fitting where the tbar bolt goes to. when fitting removed It exposes the metal fixing & I can see water dripping down through this but cant find where its initially getting in as all the rubbers are dry with no wet headlining. I have done all the silicon / clingfilm tricks to no avail. have thought of buying new seals but not sure its going to stop it.
