simple economics if it costs more to fix than replace then its a no brainer
your right tons more will have to die before this mass produced car can genuinely claim to be rare
I wonder what percentage are left. I see more MG midgets than MK1 Mr2's round here and have only ever seen one Mk1A. Give it five more years and they will be a classic.

I think the MK1a's are already acheiving classic status tbh.
Have owned 2, 87 N/A in 95 (sold in 97 after towing via the towing eyes in the front bumper - only to find major rust behind this and the front end literally fell away before my eyes - not a good day!) and recently got a 89 1b after over a 10 year drought - definitely shouldnt have left it that long!
My list is short by comparison...
Rev 1 Tubby - sold on for breaking / parts.
Mk1b NA Mica blue - sold to a friend.
Mk1 SC Mica blue - my track car.
Mk1a NA red - my daily driver.
I've bought and sold them as my circumstances have permitted. In an ideal world I'd buy and keep them all but that's not always possible.

A matter of personal opinion surely.
I much prefer the look of the mk1a. Its the original and first MR2. Also it handles better. The ECU is properly mapped to the redline and more aggressive to boot.
It is a matter of opinion. I have a Hybrid 87 so the good looking car with the better driving experience and no rust. I have colour coded everything as black plastic looks cheap IMHO of course.
Only owned two but my first T-bar lasted me 12 years.I let that one go as it was beyond repair.
The second one i purchased from Michael back in January 07.It is rust free, tucked away in my garage and only makes an appearance on dry days.
On the subject of insurance I have it insured fully comp on a classic policy for a little over £100 through Lancaster Insurance.
I will try to post some pictures later.

Nice machine - like the seats that hark back to the original mk1a design
But its not. Look at the engine. And before you say it its the original. It had a faded blue top when I got it. I repainted the cams. 87 was a hybrid year. 1A/B is not an official term anyway. TVIS opens at around 4500rpm and car has intermediate ecu code.
