Speeding (HELP!!!)

tricky this speeding. I wont pretend that I never have. But when you say "dry road, me only on road, driving within personal limits" etc etc take time to think. Do you KNOW your tyres are ok and you havnt picked up some glass or a nail in your journey, was the guage on the air pump accurate, when was the last strip down check on wheel bearings and brakes done, did that bump from the speed bump knock my tracking out, the list is endless. Truth is you dont know. If you blew out on this road and had an accident are you really telling me that nobody else will be effected? What about your wife/partner? Will she want to look after a disabled person for the rest of her life for a the price of quick sprint on a motorway? What about your friends? If you have a house could you afford to be in hospital for a length of time? Now Im not an angel, but, all Im asking you is just to stop and think about the concequences of what you are doing. As for 140+ on a public road, immoral. thats approx 200ft per second (please correct me if Im wrong) anyway think of what would happen if one tyre gave up...... that crash barrier isnt going to stop you. Anyway please accept Im not having a pop ant anyone but feel that speeding is taken too lightly. I agree motorway speed need reconsidering or at least restrictions made to HGVs. You may still hear from them. I know of a local bloke who overtook a unmarked car at 100 ish mph in his 911 turbo, and he was overtaken in the third lane by some mad power Scooby. Well the police went after the Scooby (the road had only 3 lanes; good job no one was coming the other way!) and then later knocked on the 911 turbo blokes door to give him a 'ticking off'. I suppose they'd follow it up on the same day or leave it?

there is no excuse for speeding, however in a vage attempt to defend myself, I was only going 110 - 120, and there was only one other car on the whole 1 miles of motorway i traveled.

I've only 'sped' once on a mostly empty road and I wouldn't do it again....

I've only hit the speed limiter once after I was in the fast lane a car was hurtling towards me from behind. I couldn't move over because there were people in the middle lane. Just as I started to move over (Gone past everyone !) I hit the limiter and the car lurched forwarded, split second the Merc SLK320 flew past.

Don't normally go at that speed but was quite alarmed when the guy didn't look like he was going to slow down so I decided to try and outrun him to safety.

What I want to know is why the hell are the majority of cars on sale capable of doing at least 110-120mph if it's so dangerous? In my view the biggest danger on the motorway is 'speed differential' i.e. the person doing a law-abiding 70 will not expect someone coming past them at 60mph faster! If there's no-one else in sight, to me it's nothing more than a bigger number on your speedo.

It does have to be said though that the condition of your car becomes all the more important at these speeds!

Re the drunk drivers...many people I know have been done for this & I have no sympathy - if you want a drink leave the car at home, if you've had one too many come back for it tomorrow. End of.

Know what you mean. If only your lane is clear, and someone is flying up behind you at xxx mph and is showing no signs of slowing down, i would personally speed up until i could get out of the way.
If your maintain your speed, chances are he may have trouble breaking in time, as i would assume if he is still bombing it, he is not looking ahead. This could be even more precarious.

I think it's pretty dangerous to speed up in order to get out of the way of somebody behind, of course the car is more than capable, but it just makes a dangerous situation even worse. I generally agree that if there's nobody around then you can do what you like, but the statements here about speeding up to avoid somebody because you can't move over would imply that there's quite a bit of traffic on the road, so hammering it into triple figures seems like quite a bad idea in this situation. I always keep to my original speed if this happens to me, the person behind soon realises you're not going anywhere and slows down before they get dangerously close. (If they really do get dangerously close and it looks like they can't stop, that's the time to floor it!). I'm told that if this happens you could give a right signal, to show that you plan on completing your overtake before moving over, although I haven't used it personally.

A lot of people seem to only speed because they feel 'pressured' into it from traffic behind them. I know when I'm following a 30 limit which should be more like a 50, I can feel several pairs of eyes on me, willing me to burst into flames so that they can speed past! But really the worst thing you can do is give in and speed up (especially if the car behind is an unmarked traffic car...)
