Nice to see someone has put right Max Powers original hard work! That was a Max Power built car, and a shed at that. I know of the guy you got it off and roughly how much he payed for it so i'd say you probably got a bargain.

Looks tons better now, good work, but stop copying my carbon front spolier!

Only £700 now, if it had been that price when I fitted my border kit I'd have taken it on instead !


Anyone fitted this kit yet ? For that price, I wouldn't mind if there was more than usual bodywork required to get it to fit.

What James is saying is that it's a fantastic kit IF you spend a LOT of time and money getting it to look good. Jimbobs car is the only one I've seen with similar quality panel gaps as those on the original TRD cars (one of which I have sitting on my drive :wink: ) and you will still need to spend a shedload on wheels....

Not a cheap option!! If you fancy a bodykit and have a 'normal' bodykit budget do border, bomex or veilside or similar!! Better to have a nicely fitted one of them than a TRD kit looking crap.

But bearing the costs of the kit in mind, you can save hell of lot on the insurance as my car is classified as a Kit car and I only pay £300 fully comp with limited mileages, :whistle: :whistle:

Which compared to my previous two's is a bargain, so its worth taking everything into consideration if you do decide to go ahead with the project?

The insurance aspect is definitely worth noting, they don't even want to know about modifications. :shock: But if you're under 24 they might not quote you so be prepared for that to.

It makes you wonder whether fitting a full Veilside/Bomex kit would also qualify as a kit car... Why would the TRD kit be the exception to the rule :-k

More extensive I guess - a full 'ferrari' kit also seems to qualify.

Bear in mind these policies for kit cars are also normally
a) mileage limited
b) SD&P only (no driving for work or commuting)
c) often limited to your 'second car' only

All things I was specifically asked on my (£239!) policy.
Also you don't build up any no claims (or use any, which is why it's ace for a second car).

Phoned up my insurance company today for an update as engine has gone pop. Now changed policy to 400bhp engine with no change in premium. Mines 350quid but my circumstances are probably a little different.

I think you hit it on the head Toni. I've seen the TRD you have and I would agree my panel gaps are as good :whistle: Isn't that what you said? :wink:

Another word of warning is settlement. I noticed even on yours that it is evident where the kit has been fitted due to fibreglass settlement. This is simply unaviodable, you cannot prevent against it...................unless you fit the kit, smooth and flat then leave in dry storage for around 12months through varying heat cycles, i.e under cover in a barn for one year.

Mine is now going back in to be resprayed on the rear wings. I can show you pictures of how it was PERFECT after spraying but know needs reflatting. Be prepared if you want a really nice kit, the cost goes on.

Didn't realise that was yours now Toni, hopefully you've had spit and polish out on engine :wink:

Also worth considering on a cheaper kit is quality of glass layup and gelcoat. Fortunatly my replica kit was spot on in terms of engineered build quality but pooh in terms of fitment. A thin gelcoat will lead to a paint job that chips easily, mines been poly-refaced for additional security and flatness. Don't forget the bumper is that a bumper and if a crash situation acts as a crumple zone, a cheap kit may do more than just crumple and be poor at absorbing impact. I'm sure this is where some of the sdditional cost goes in a genuine kit.

Anyway they are cool so set aside the money and go for it! 8)

Just saw this!

Yes James, engine has gone in for a polish and a little bit more. :wink:

The car is now resprayed in original colour so I can't see any evidence of settlement...and yes I did say your panel gaps were good, LOL. :)

What happens if you make a claim? Wouldnt they then bring that up?

To answer both
a) they know the car is highly modified but don't mind/don't care what they are
b) apparently according to James - it's had a respray this year so I couldn't see any evidence of it though. :-k

Hmm has anyone ever heard of a mark 3 being eligeable for this kit kar insurance.

Maybe the gt replica ? or the APR widebody ?

I have alot of mods and i am virtualy gettign to a new car anyway when does it become a kit car ?

I can find subaru and mk2 based ones that are very little changed from the original donor.

I am wondering what the amount of changes required are, for example - if I have already changed the whole suspension and the wheels, and I have a fitted bodykit, I want to make some new rear lights with FG and some Skyline Lights I have brought. if i added a new engine and gearbox then it would be sufficiently diferent ?

What then ? an SVA test maybe ?

I cant find much on this on the net, but this link http://www.flowingchocolate.co.uk/ about the veranti, a mk2 conversion, mentions ....
As the Veranti is based on the MR2 and in no way alters the floor pan of the original MR2 the vehicle is SVA exempt.


so is the veranti pre agreed ? or can I just invent some panels even?
