IMOC had died! December 04, there was no IMOC, the old site had crashed, was unusable and wasn't going to come back!.

As I remember it previous to that Esmond had offered to build a new site as the old members (including me) were complaining about the old sites lack of features, but his offer was never taken up. Then when IMOC finally did go bang Esmond and Ben started to set up the new site, 2 weeks it took and was practically a bare shell! As I remember we had one of the MR2OC.co.uk admin laughing and slating the new site for being so basic!

Now just look where it is now, what features we have and nearly 4000 members in less than one year, that's some achievement IMO, and clearly wouldn't have happened without the Admin team who volunteered to be admins whilst on the old site.

EVERYONE who was on the old site had a chance to put their names forward but only 6 did! Probably because everyone else thought it was too big a job or we were going down a dead end... So I really dont think its fair for people to come on here complaining/questioning about how the admin were elected, now that we have a great new site that imo is in it's own league compared to the others, when everyone had the chance to step forward in the first instance.

<Shudder>

I remember that all too well - I worked many nights trying to sort that out, it wasn't a fun time. The old site was becoming unreliable, with outages of a couple of days at a time which was unacceptable.

We decided to move the site to a dedicated server I built to give it some extra horsepower, but we ended up with exactly the same problems and in the end it wasn't possible to trace what was repeatedly killing the site.

They were a stupidly busy two weeks. I can appriciate from the point of view of everyone using the site that nothing much appeared to be going on - but I was building servers (twice!) moving DNS addresses, moving locations of the website (twice) and getting them set up.

It became apparent though that the old site was broken beyond repair.

Just prior to that, Esmond had just come on board as the new Webmaster - he picked his moment perfectly ;)

We ended up making the radical decision to start again from scratch, get top of the range paid-for hosting and recover whatever we could from the old site - unfortuantly that wasn't much as the database was in a bad way, and the files area had lost its files.

We've come a very long way in the year - what you see now is a direct result of the long hours that all the committee have put into making the right environment for MR2 entheusiasts to meet.

A lot of the work goes un-noticed, but is essential to the running of the site - and the work is invaluable - Toni has given an view of the kind of day to day work that is done. The new Committee roles help to give visibility of the work that each of us does in order to achieve that.

I certainly can say (with 'Chairman' hat on) that I'm very well supported by all the members of the current Committee team - they really do a great job.

Looking ahead to 2006 - there is a lot of further work to do that they're aware of.

I'm going to need their time and effort to make these things happen - it will be great to see things come together. I'm really looking forward to working with them over the next 12 months, as well as the new Forum Moderators - I'm sure we can move IMOC-UK on still further.

Evolution of IMOC from the old state was needed for some time, but I'm thinking about the whole 'thing' rather than just website problems.

I take my hat off to those who are involved in the general running of the club for giving up their free time for the benefit of everyone on here. I'd love to get involved in IMOC more than I do now (which basically amounts to posting gripes on this forum :D) but am limited by far too many 'real life' family/friends/work commitments to make anything IMOC-related worthwhile. Fair play. =D>

Apart from MR2s, one of my main interests is gaming, and run a clan server as well as run/moderate/admin on a number of related forums. The amount of people who want to be moderators/admins for some sort of ego boost (and/or to fuel some level of self-importance and self-worth) is amazing - they have absolutely no idea how much time these things take up, and so hence my comment in the paragraph above.

I agree that everyone who has given up their spare time has done an excellent job.

But still disagree about IMOC-UK being dead in December 2004, it was never dead!

Perhaps a better way to put it is that if Ben and Esmond hadn't seized it by the neck and wrung some life out of it it may have died a slow and painful death - either way it was headed on a steep downward slope.

No need to dwell however, we're motoring now.
