Too much boost, poor petrol...

I was assuming that while it was apart you'd do the obvious things such as cleaning and testing injectors, fuel filter, test the pump, ignition components, etc etc

If it's going back as a stock set up then it should be pretty easy to sort....my bet is that it was ragged in the past and has been a ticking time bomb since...

Fingers crossed the bores are ok, then you can whack it back together with a fresh set of pistons and rings (and a rehone) and boost on, may as well do the big end bearings whilst your at it :thumleft:

i'd be looking for what caused it to happen first :-k as Bob said, broken ringland is usually caused by knock/det, what's caused the detonation???

Too much timing advance, too much boost, low grade of fuel.

Compression test today

162
102 oil in spark plug area
155 a little in spark plug area
162

Leak from cam cover gasket above manifold. Engine management light is on constantly(need to put up the error codes mate) car stuttering and popping/banging about 3k revs and won't boost.

The car did need the rad replacing a few weeks back and that is now done and all fine, but unsure if the rad losing coolant has caused any overheating.

Thanks for updating this mate.
Error codes 21 and 52, car does drive but in limp mode so im not driving it.. However did take it round the block again before compression test and it bangs really loud when it hits boost hard it seems which is around 3000revs.
Checked for loose/burst hoses but couldnt find any on inspection, did notice that a puff of smoke does follow the bang in engine bay (not exhaust) however due to oil on the manifold there is always smoke when manifold is hot.
The engine management light will come on after a minute or 2 of driving or when it gets above 2500-3000revs.

Considering whether to replace the engine for a good one or go another route but dont want to go crazy with money :-k

One piston has broken ring lands from too much knock, and if the code is 52 then the knock sensor has gone too.

A dead knock sensor will limit your revs.
So is the reason you can't go past 3-3.5k rpm.

To be honest you really want to stop running the engine, if you have done a piston the more you run it the more chance of damaging the bore...
