Very interesting project

Re: Goldy's MK2 Flappy Paddle Gearbox Build
Now got a display wired up, programmed and working.
This shows what gear you have selected when using the flappy paddles.
When you're not using the flappy paddles it'll show what gear the ECU has selected.
Going to fit it to the dash in place of the o/d light

Re: Goldy's MK2 Flappy Paddle Gearbox Build
I've been modifying my car to add the LED display and moving the the wiring to allow the control unit to be mounted in the centre cubby box.

I've decided that i'm going to remove the O/D light an put a mini gear indicator in there
:

Flip it round and it's secured with two little tabs, so it was removed!

Mini 7 segment display soldered
: and positioned

Then cut out some dark smoked matt polyester sheet and positioned where the O/D light was
:

We have power and it works!!!!

Next, was wiring the car, i've added a 9 way d-type connector to the display so it can be connected and disconnected easily.
I ran a male d-type from the centre console to behind the dash
:

I then ran the power wiring and solenoid wiring down the centre console to come out in the apropriate place.
I'm quite tempted to get a perspex lid on the box, I reckon it looks quite cool with all the electronics showing?

Powered up the in car, and shifted up and down, all working nicely!

When the car is in
"flappy paddle mode" the display shows the gear that has been selected, when in
"full auto mode" it shows the gear that the ecu has selected so you can always see what gear you're in

Cheers chaps, got a few little niggles to sort out and a bit more software to write but it seems to be running quite well so far.

If i had a hat i would take it off to you sir!

Anybody else want to nominate this for the

Re: Goldy's MK2 Flappy Paddle Gearbox Build
Genius.
Absolute GENIUS.

How does the car compare in gear changes between full auto and
"flappy paddle"
?

Do you find it more fun to drive when you have control?

Re: Goldy's MK2 Flappy Paddle Gearbox Build
Its a different driving experience having full control of the gearbox.
Downshifts are very snappy and because you can keep it in whatever gear you want, it makes keeping your foot down round roundabouts and corners a lot less dicey!

I actually enjoy driving the auto round town a lot more than my old manual but its fantastic having the freedom of gear changes in the twisty stuff

This is sick!
Too cool for words mate, genius

Re: Goldy's MK2 Flappy Paddle Gearbox Build
Added a mode selector switch to replace ye olde kill switch, might need to tidy up my stickerage at some point

Re: Goldy's MK2 Flappy Paddle Gearbox Build
This is a sweet modification to an auto car!
I really like the aftermarket steering wheel with the buttons on, looks much better than it was before IMO.
The digital gauge showing you what gear your in is an especially nice touch.

You should stick another video up with the new set up working

OFF= Full normal auto controlled by ECU.
Road= Tiptronic control, gears 1-5, gear 5
= 4th gear with the torque converter locked out.
Race= Gears 1
- 4 with torque coverter locked out all the time in 2nd, 3rd and 4th
so there is no torque converter slip at all, makes it direct drive like a manual.
The gear changes are a lot harsher than road mode.
Cheers for the comments chaps, i'll try and do another vid at some point but I don't have a video camera and my phone one is pants!

awesome man!!!! get a video of driving it hard!!
