I've heard of it before, but not really paid it a lot of attention.

Been having a nosey, some good stuff on there.

A little bit of beardage today. Decided to change the wheel arch extension that I've had since I got the car!

I replaced with a new OEM one I managed to get via my local Toyota dealer.

Replacing it wasn't that bad, got the old one off easy enough. Putting the new one on, I had to use a standard nut to bolt the frontmost fixing point as it was just too awkward to get the longer nut on. Took me about ten minutes to get the first three bolts on and about about 40 minutes to get the last one on! Still, got there in the end and it smartens up the rear three quarter no end. :+:

Garage-D have been doing a feature of 'I love my AE86' with different luminaries in the AE86 world.

This one is worth a watch not only because the guy obviously :lover: his AE86's but really for his demonstration of doing donuts in his garage around a pillar with about a foot to spare each side. Very impressive!

http://vimeo.com/23092241

The donuts in the garage start around 6:18. This guy also gives some interesting history on the 'rings' left all over Ireland by AE86's.

Ta John. It does seem to have a really good turn-in, I almost don't want to mess with the geo but I guess I'll have to get it setup as it is slightly out.

I've been looking at Speedhunters a fair bit lately, there is some good stuff on there. The Corolla Brotherhood is good for AE86 stuff.

I've also sold Pat the Panda today so I can start getting the big things done on the car, like treating the rust and all the fairly minor cosmetic stuff. Then I can send it off to chassisclean and get it full of dinitrol. Then just a matter of fitting an oil cooler and I ought to be ready for Angers. :+:

Have spoken to the aircon people this morning. They reckon about £200 ish to convert to R134A which is desirable as the guy reckoned the substitute R12 is only about 65% efficient. They will vacuum the system for a couple of hours, then add an oil that is R12 compatible then refill with R134A. After that I can get refilled anywhere. :+:

Had loads of fun today changing the discs and pads all round.

Turned out the crappy EBC blacks they sent me, the inner pads would not locate in the torque bracket. So Mark went off to the workshop and stuck them in the milling machine to remove about half the pad material. Anyways that all went wrong so they ended up in the bin.

Now I have got the old inner pads and the new outer pads in the front. Did the front discs okay, had no idea you had to dissasemble the hub, but it wasn't too bad really.

Did the rears okay.

Now all we need to do is change the brake fluid tomorrow and go on the hunt for some Mintex 1144 pads for the front. Not really ideal running a mix of old and new pads on the front on brand new discs.

Pics and stuff to follow.

The issue:

Can clearly see the problem here, pad backplate is not within the caliper torque bracket:

Cleaning up the outer bearing:

Bolting up the disc to the hub, easiest to put the hub in the wheel to hold it as needs to be torqued:

Toyota have clearly designed this the wrong way round. Discs are supposed to go on hubs #-o

Yep, was a bit of a shock when I took the wheel off! In practice, a bit more faff but nothing difficult to do really.

Going to put the outer old pads on the front so we have matching pairs and bin the new pads. Think it's a better bet. Expect they'll chew up the new discs, but no other option at the moment.

Still all at sea as to what pads I should get.

Right all done. Brakes feel absolutely terrible, but will take a while to bed in.

Master cylined is shagged so will need to rebuild that also. Then just a matter of finding pads and I may then, have brakes I can begin to depend on.

The old discs were terrible and obviously we'd already fitted the new front disc when we found the problem. Changing the front discs is a fair bit more involved than doing the rears as you have to dismantle the hub and regrease it etc.

Will be on a mission to get new pads of course.

The pads are much softer material than discs, it takes a long time for discs to wear to an uneven pad shape, i can't see Lauren having any problem at all running old pads for such a short period of time in all honesty, it would take weeks or months for the disc surface to wear unevenly.

Have already ordered some cheap pads which ought to be here, say by Wednesday. It's easy to change the pads.

Then, if Carbotech can help I'll have the old pads with the right shaped backing plates to send off. :+:

Ordering parts for the master cylinder rebuild tomorrow as that's on it's way out.

Okay have spoken to Carbotech, they can make up pads for me in XP8 compound. They have an excellent reputation but obviously not cheap at around £180 all in(!).

Will send them my old backing plates as they can re-use them.

Mark has been to see Toyota this morning. Picked up the decals for the boot which should look nice when on. Also ordered a master cylinder rebuild kit, new windscreen wiper knob and some clips for the headlining.

I will have brakes that work!

Almost cannot believe that our local Toyota dealer managed to find an original set of decals. Taken a month to get here from Toyota Japan:
