apparently so, Andy says a guy he knows tested the metal and it is even a different composition to the earlier ones. I've linked him to this thread so hopefully he can chime in as he's way more knowledgeable than I am about it.

Yeah if you're going 3S, then get hold of a square edged 98+ block from an NA.

There's much more re-enforcement around the water pump area (crack point 1) which interestingly they also made the same improvement to the 5S block at the same time.

Additionally, the material is of a different hardness. Confirmed by a chap on here who bought my late 5S blocks and tested bore thickness etc with specialist equipment.

I'd also recommend getting 2 or 3 blocks, and having the bore thickness between 2-3 measured and select the best.

Also go 86mm pistons.

Or, even better save youself the arseache of it all and go 5S.

Ok thanks. Do you have any pictures of 98+ blocks? I'm browsing eBay for one and half of them dont have the year of car their off. I just wanted a sure fire way to identify the useful 3sge blocks.

No idea lol.

I installed my intake pipe and took the car for a logging session.



Bottom graph shows the temps were much better. But it is much colder outside. Looks to be rising 10c per gear change.

Top of 1st - 27c
Top of 2nd - 33c
Top of 3rd - 44c

Making 11.5 psi boost too. Which reminded me I need to sort out my electronic boost control.

ive sourced a 98+ 3sge block. and its relatively local. so thats one less item to get. just need to look into the oil passageway drilling thats required.

is there any specific guides? or info for whats required.

Before you do that, spend £70 on a proper calibratedtool to measure the wall thickness between 2-3.

there's companies that will rent one to you for a day - best get 2 or 3 blocks then keep the best one for yourself.

Although the corner is super, there's still the variances between 2-3 on the design. I think 1.6mm is the thinnest seen and 2.3 the thickest.

You can suddenly see that if you have a 1.6mm wall, and then you upsize your pistons by .5mm how suddenly your walls are very thin and prone to crack at the top 1/4 of the cylinder wall.....!

Well I collected my 98 square edged block. I've cleaned/oiled up the bores and bearing seats. Just gotta figure out what else I need to make it work with the rest of my rev2 turbo setup.

Yeah I've been looking into it. Some people T off the head. So that could be an option.

I think the return has to be lower than the turbo bud. Could be mistaken about that though.

isnt the return just a rubber pipe that goes into the sump? either way maybe i could look at braided AN or something posh

It is yeah but the oil isn't pumped through the return. So if the return line was higher, Your turbo would fill with oil basically. I'm sure the drain has to be the lowest point in the turbo system.

Had a day off today. So I've been fixing the smaller jobs.

Finally got around to sorting my driver's door glass.


The blue is where the glass on the right of the picture used to sit when the door was closed. So it's now sitting in the right place against the seal.

Whilst doing the window I noticed I'm missing one of these plastic wedges:


Anyone got one?

Also I changed the intercooler pipework clamps from wormdrive to mikalors. Looks much better and it all feels so much more secure.



Planning to do some road tuning tomorrow.

ill dig them out and PM them you with what i did. me too. ive had the car over 2 years and finally got annoyed by wind noise whilst driving and wet drivers seat LOL.

well ive had to come into work to cover a shift...so tuning another day.

where did you get the seals? the very bottom of my drivers door glass doesnt push against the seal, presume its just the seal has squashed over time.

Ah well, Used but near new. Got them off a guy breaking one. It's 100% the windows. They are really loose. Wobble about when i have them down haha!
