Here is a proposed plan for the after Le Mans event. Have a look and get back to me with comments. We have 7 couples on the list to attend.

Leave the chateau on Tuesday 17th early and head north to Mont St Michel

Visit the website for all the information on this amazing 1300 year old place.

http://www.ot-montsaintmichel.com/accueil_gb.htm

We can stay here for 2 nights and explore the area. We will not all get in the same hotel as they are quite small and historic so we will need to source a number within the same area, bearing in mind its a small island.

http://www.lemontsaintmichel.info/

On Wednesday 18th you can visit jersey for the day which is only 1 hour on the ferry or you can visit St Marlo or simply explore Mont St Michel further.

On Thursday 19th we can head further north along the Brittany coastal road and stop over around the Dieppe area.

More updates soon.

Pete,

Germany sounds good and I know Reema really wants to go to the ring, but I think its just too far to drive. Me and Shane looked at this today over the table and mapped it out. Nuremberg is about 550 miles from Le Mans and then about the same back to the ferry, we wouldn't get there till evening on the Tuesday and would have to leave on the Thursday to drive back and stay nearer Boulogne. We seriously considered Brugge again but felt it wouldn't be the same going back there, been there, done it sort of feeling.

What do you think about the proposed plan above. The coastal drive through Brittany would be fantastic and its heading back towards Bolougne all the time so not many extra road miles will be driven. If we go for Mont St Michel we are going to have to get hotels booked up quickly.

Let us know your thoughts and we can go from there.

Michael,

mont saint michel looks great. I understand completely about Germany. It is a long distance. And I had thought that Brugge wouldn't be so good now that it's already been done. So it gets my vote!

Once the trip has been decided then drop me an email and we'll go from there.

Pete.

Phew! thats a relief, I was a little concerned you had your heart set on the RING, we can always plan this trip in another time.

Ok then this post is confirmation of the optional add on MR2 trip France.

Tuesday 17th Depart from the chateau and head north A28 to the Normandy coast and the 1300 year old island of Mont St Michel. Arrive around lunchtme and book into designated hotels on the island. Its going to be difficult to all get into the same hotel so I will list the hotels available within the same vicinity, remember you can walk around the whole island in half an hour. Most of the hotels look really quaint and old traditional style, cost wise you are looking at 100 - 120 euros per night for a double room.

Wednesday 18th Now there will be an option for this day, either stay in Mont St Michel and explore, take in the atmosphere and culture and relax in the bars, I mean museums and old churches. The second option is to tour around the region, St Malo and Cherbourg are all within an hours drive and probably worth a visit. The third option which I'll definately be doing is a trip to Jersey on the boat which is only 1 hour. At present I have no idea whats there or what to do but I like the idea of this. So to recap the following options are:

1. Relax in Mont St Michel.
2. Visits to local coastal towns, Cherbourg & St Malo and surrounding regions.
3. Trip to Jersey.

On the night we can all meet up in town and have a nice meal and drinks together.

Thursday 19th Leave Mont St Michel and head towards Dieppe driving the coastal roads through Brittany. At present there is no plan where to stay, but somewhere around Dieppe would logistically be good. Will update this later after some research.

Friday 20th Leave Dieppe and head towards Boulogne for the ferry back, this should be no more than an hours drive.

How does this sound so far, will update hotels later

Ok guys, here are some hotel options. We need to make sure the hotel is actually on the island and there is some form of parking.

I can get HOTEL DU MOUTON BLANC MONT SAINT MICHEL 86 € for a double room, thats about £60 per night and its right in the old part of the town.

Have a look at this site for more options.

Some history about Mont Saint Michel

MONT ST. MICHEL LOCAL HISTORY
The island of Mont St-Michel was at one time known as the "Mount in Peril from the Sea", because numerous pilgrims in the medieval ages were drowned or died in the quicksand while trying to cross to the island.

The abbey was founded in the eighth century the ishop of Avranches, Aubert who had a vision of the protecor of the island, the Archangel Michael. In the 11th century work was started on the church and building has carried on over the centuries which has resulted in a hotch-potch of Gothic and Romanesque styles.

Although no more than 40 monks lived on the Mont right up to the French Revolution, it was always thought of as important religious community. At the time of the Revolution it was utilised as a prison.until in 1966, the Benedictines were invited to return to the island. This took place exactly a thousand years after Duke Richard 1st originally introduced the order to the Mont. These days a small number of nuns and monks inhabit the island.

MONT ST. MICHEL ATTRACTIONS
The Abbey – is the main tourist attraction in the area. It is a stunning set of buildings perched on top of a rocky promontory. It includes a church with tall-spires and a statue of the archangel Michael situated on its top and some wonderful Gothic buildings known since the early 13th century, as the Merveille, (The Marvel). The Abbey with it’s Cloister’s , Refectory, Knights' Hall and cellars can be seen from all around the bay, and is an awe inspiring sight from any angle or distance. The abbey's history and development can be seen from scale models situated in the reception area.

The Town – You climb up the fortified Porte du Roi onto The Grande Rue which is lined with medieval houses and a numerous shops. A plaque by the main staircase states that a Jacques Cartier when presented to King François I on this spot on May 8, 1532, was charged with exploring Canada’s coast.

Musee Maritime – This interesting museum shows how the town’s links with sea have influenced its development.

MONT ST. MICHEL RESTAURANTS
La Mere Poulard – Mont St-Michel. This expensive hotel restaurant is famous for its omelettes, as served to the likes of Trotsky and years later the British Prime Minister, Margeret Thatcher.

Motel Vert - Located on the D976 just before the causeway to the island. The restaurant here is more reasonably priced and the food is good.

Montgomery Hotel - 3 rue du Couesnon,Pontorson . This little town is 6km inland and many visitors to the island stay here. The hotel is in a lovely, ivy-covered mansion and boasts a superb restaurant.

MONT ST. MICHEL BARS & CLUBS
Bretagne Hotel - 59 rue du Couesnon, Pontorson. The elegant bar here is a lovely place to relax after a day exploring the island. They also have a distinguished restaurant, which is quite pricey.

Mouton Blanc – Mont St-Michel – The hotel bar is comfortable and relaxed.

La Mere Poulard – Mont St-Michel. The sophisticated bar in this high class hotel is expensive but nonetheless a very comfortable place to relax.

Michael

A great plan if i say so myself. All that eating and drinking this weekend must have inspired us.

Mont St Michel is a little difficult to get accomodation in

But there are the towns just off the island and in the bay which still seem to have accomodation in them. Seem to be a few withing 2-3 miles. This might be an option and then a trip on to the Island itself

We had a little look and the ferry to Jersey costs around £26 for a foot passenger. Like yourself i am not sure whats there but it is tax free for those who might like to make a little purchase while there.

Hello guys,

Some news from the French club.
There should be at least 11 cars from the FMOC comming.
(9 MR2, 1 F348 and a Lexus). So around 17 frogs

Looking forward to meet you all !

Ps : I read about your trip after Le Mans. So just for your information, I've heard that we can no longer park next to Le Mont St Michel, we have to park cars far away from it, and take the bus. Once you're in, there are A LOT of stairs to climb, but what you can see from the top is really nice 8)
Concerning st Malo, another very touristic area, it's now hard to find a place to park your car without paying. Be sure when you book your hotel that there is space free to park your MR2s.

Just had a look at your garage on IMOC and that is a lovely MR Spider there. Can't wait to see it in June and meet the rest of the French Club.

Hi Shane, Peter & Reema,
Thanks for your comments about my car.
I'll be glad to show it to you next june.
Hopefully under the sun

hi all,

given what jean-christophe has said about the issues with parking/taking vehicles onto the island, maybe we should go with shane's suggestion of staying just off the island. i had a look through the links that michael posted and this hotel looks good:

http://www.le-saint-aubert.fr/?lang=en

the reason it looks good is that it is just at the foot of the causeway to the island, it has a private carpark and there are 27 rooms. there still appears to be availability for tue 17th to thu 19th june too. i'm not entirely sure about the price without contacting them as i got a bit confused when i tried to do a dummy booking  but, i think it's about 50 euros per person per night -ish!!

let us know what you think.

Hi Pete and Reema

That place looks fine to me.

Why dont you drop them an email and get a confirmed cost for a group then we know what we are looking at.

I tried to go in and check it but not sure if the cost is for a room or per person to be honest but looks ok and has the parking

Yep,

Aubert looks good to me and its right on the causeway, the parking is definately a bonus and the rooms are really cheap, trip advisor gives it a 4 out of 5 and the reviews are quite good.

Pete, thate yourself and Reema, Shane and Susan, Saj and Gemma, Lisa and Steve and Gordon and Alison and myself and Joanne for definate so thats 6 couples thus far, we could probably get a block booking and a bit cheaper although its cheap anyway.

Just had another look at this hotel guys and put it through trip advisor.

It really reasonablly priced at about £100 for 2 nights for 2 people or get the superior rooms for only about £15 more.

See what you can do on it guys but Susan & I are up for it.

I see they also do meals and have a nice bar area. Car will be safe as out the way. Rooms look fine. (In fact they will be luxuary after 7 days in tent).

Let us know how it goes and we can get things arranged.

I think it might be a good idea for us all to book the hotel ourselves so we can manage our own bookings, might be easier......

The hotels are filling up fast with it being their 1300 birthday ( nearly as old as Jo!! ) we need to get this sorted today really, I'm thinking about booking this now.

Hi Everyone,

I reccomend that everyone books themselves a hotel room asap.

I have sent them an online booking reservation through their website which totals for 2 people, 2 nights 110 Euros.

This works out about £75 for the 2 nights which is great! You will be requested to pay half now on card and then half on arrival. Therefore I cannot really afford to block book everyone into the hotel myself.

Will someone be able to contact Gordon and Alison though? As I know they don't come on here very often.

I have booked for the Tuesday 17th and Wednesday 18th June.

Let me know how you get on,

Pete. :thumleft:

Guys,

I've booked my room @ St Aubert on the casusway to the Mont Michel for £81 for the 2 nights in a double room. I really don't think we will get it any cheaper than that and thats cracking value as it stands. I booked it through booking.com

NO PAYMENT IS TAKEN AT THE TIME OF BOOKING

There is 1 superior room available at £120 if anyone feels flush!!

My advice wil be to book your room NOW otherwise you might have to source a hotel further afield.
