Seems like you've been one of the few unlucky ones with a poor example. I do think that rev 3's are considerably more reliable than rev 1/2's. I picked up my turbo cheap and it's needed a few minor things doing, probably cost me about £800 in repairs in the 7 months I've had it which isn't that bad. I still think these cars are very reliable considering their age and the power they kick out.

People often forget their age, and with all that power being put out all the time, things are going to need replacing. Agreed luck, or maybe previous use, has a lot to do with it but remember what you bought it for!

1st new recon engine fitted

Hg is replacing ur recon engine, so if the engine was good first place, u dont need to replace it

my is fine, for now ^^, but i changing engine soon so that may be a different story

The first engine i had the bottom end went on it, recon engine fitted and the head gasket went on it after it over heated 6 months on. So just head gasket being fited not another engine.

Personally i think the guy who fitted the recon engine didn't exactly know what he was doing. He was a friend of a friend if you know what i mean. I was finding bits that wasn't tight and missing bolts of a god few weeks.

So now it's gone to someone who knows MR2's inside out and when it comes back it should be in A1 condition, engine wise. I'm then changing the suspension YET again then i think everything should be working correctly......I hope

You could have bought new suspension by now!

Buying 2nd hand suspension which will have been on a car more than 10 years old is a waste of time IMHO. Hence your continued trouble in that department.

£4k so far............. Thats nothing!! :D

I dont think anyone can touch me on my repairs to my tubby.
Bought it for 6k back in 2002 tbar turbo 1992, total lemon!

Wrote it off, fixed it £2k
onto 3rd gearbox £1k
head gasket blew, JJ fixed £600
Air con compresser £500
Tein suspension failure £500
Headgasket again, new engine £1.8k
Steering rack £200
Clutch failure x2 £700
Radiater leak £200
Water pipes leak £100
turbo falure £550

Thats over £8k plus 6k for car, and thats just the main things i can think of and without any mods!!

Just worked out Mods to around 6k.

So, working out, now spent well over 20k  on a 1992 300bhp car..................
Holy s@*t, im off the hang myself...................................................................................

How on earth did things you replaced go wrong again?
Fix it properly and dont fix it again, did you not fix them properly first time round?

Who changed you £700 for a clutch change?

Matt

Things were fixed well! J.J fixed head and gearbox first time round, maybe second box was already on its way out, you can never tell and were hard to come by at the time! Although head was skimmed, maybe it was warped or was just knackered, who knows.

Cluth has been changed twice, at £350 a shot. first was arp clutch, which failed, second one (in now) is a clutch masters.

Just been very unlucky

NOT how to buy a car.

Not true, Item has to be as described even if theres a small dent or scratch they missed out you dont have to buy it.

You always get to take the for a run out before handing over any money. Its just like any other private sale.

Blimey, thought you meant you paid out £700 EACH clutch change.
How many miles between replacing them?
I fitted an RPC clutch 3 and a bit years and about 9k miles ago with no problems at all.

I always find it a bit strange when people have never ending problems :-k

 That was a lot for a rev2, even then??!!! I paid 3.5k for mine back then...

Maybe I've just been lucky... :-k Just clocked over 180,000 on the odometer last weekend and it has NEVER let me down. Never been late, never been towed back. I do do a lot to it though... oil and filter twice a month... everything checked daily. And I do a LOT of miles.

Wow so that's £14k in total.

Don't be too surprised about the clutch, I've known some aftermarket clutches fail after only 12 months. If used hard clutches won't last anywhere near as long as they should.

I would add to this that choice of parts contributes massively to 'luck' with cars.

I barely even look at mine. Check the oil lever every couple of months. Never seems to go down.
Albeit I only do about 3k a YEAR though lol.
I really need to change the oil now though, I keep putting it off and off lol.

If you...

You think £3500 is bad then I dare not tell you my story

Over £9k spent as I purchased a crap car.

Engine rebuild
Practically all parts replaced, calipers etc
Build fails

Re-build
Fails

Re-build
Get some mods and the next day
Water leak starts

On the way back
Water falls out of the car,
Boom

Re-build....
That's it 'so' far.

You either get lucky or... don't. :(

You may be not far off your 3rd clutch....
I had a bad experience with a Clutch Master which was shipped over from the states....lasted less than 12 months....Not good. Was not happy to say the least, especially as the car is a second car and i had only covered appox 5000 miles on it! ](*,)
Have a Fensport Helix 4 paddle ceramettallic in now and it holds ALL the power. Has been in for 4 years. :thumleft:

I might be wrong. There are quite good examples these day looked after with good after market parts;for the current prices. Also some that need crushing too!
