You say it's original car number 15, but then say the 'kit' is quite well fit. Is this a TRD replica or not? :-k

Well instead of doing that daft smiley, why dont you actually explain the car then

I'm assuming from that, that Toyota themselves took original cars and fit kits to them and that the panels for the TRD cars weren't on production line like a normal MR2?

I imagine Neil used the word 'kit' loosely...

Its a genuine TRD MR2 yes, hence it has been designated a number.

I assume the same.

as said all the "genuine" TRD cars, as with mine and Toni's, started life as a normal MR2, they then had the kit fitted by Toyota Technocraft/TRD. as Jim said, sometimes these had been on the road for a while, sometimes i believe they went straight from the factory. Unfortunately TRD hold no record as to what spec each one was etc (or lost or don't want to give away or etc...)

AFAIK, If you wan't to go to what may often get referred to as the original TRD2000GT, i.e. the one that competed in the JGTC, with the number 25 on on the link here (won 5/6 races beating porches and ferraris!)

Then effectively this is a kit as well, and again, afaik, had no chassis mods (i have not read through the gt-300 regs in detail but i think it wasnt permitted.

The mr2 with the chasis mods (but again it is still a kitted and modded mr2) is the sard mc8r for again which they had the race and road version. I think that 10 of these were made for the road =P~

The TRD2000GT that i have is in away similar to this, it is the road version (tribute?) of the race car linked to above. Yes it varies slightly, not as wide at the back end some vents missing etc, but i dont think this kit was ever designed for a race car, just to look like one.

I refer to it as it is a kit on a standard mr2, the fact that it is an original is due to it being built by Technocraft/TRD and built using a TRD produced kit. As Jim says, this is proven by the VIN plate, and when seen the quality of the panels and fitment.

Hopefully that clears a few things, it is a shame that so little is known about these cars and the web is flooded with unfounded rumours so don't believe everything you read. Indeed some of what i have typed maybe incorrect and i stand to be corrected if it is!

Cheers

Neil is right - started life as a normal Toyota MR2, the kit was manufactured and fitted by TRD Technocraft - there were 35 'official' cars with vin plates that had this carried out. They deliberately limited it to ensure exclusivity, but did market the kit after that. Hence there are replicas of the 35 official cars often for sale in Japan. (I think one or two made it over here too).

The wider track often talked about in relation to a TRD car is just in fact due to offset/tyre widths. Their suspension is identical to a 'normal' MR2...

5, 8, 15 or 25/35 I don't think it matters. :D I'd guess they were all done fairly much at the same time...some as from new others from existing cars. So they could be anything from a rev1 to a rev5...suspension and engine mods depending on the owner.

T
p.s. why do I have half a dozen people think I am looking after it for them, LOL
p.p.s get to pick mine up this Friday :thumleft: Can't wait, have been without it for months...keep seeing something else to add....

Absolutely toni. Also a point that still confuses me a little is that there were also some N/As in the group of original cars.

Really chuffed thanks Lauren, i'm not a good person at waiting! It will be at Tatton. Definately come along - will bring the reggae reggae sauce  your back o.k for camping now?

Cheers for the offer Rowland - i take it your the first person on the list that i am looking after this one for :D

Lovelycar. I read on NVI website that he was sourcing a TRD and was wondering who it would be for :thumleft:
