Could you put a wheel nut into a wheel stud and wind it all the way down so its at the brake disc. Then get a long handle torque wrench or similar with the right socket and slot it over the wheel bolt on the. Have the wrench handle on the ground (so its trying to turn into the ground) and locked against the direction it will try and travel when you try and take the crank nut off. Then decent long handle ring spanner and rubber mallet.

I adopted this method when the engine was out of the car and it worked a treat (except I fixed the wrench to a FW bolt). It took 10 good hard smashes on the spanner with the mallet for it to come free!

Dave, don't know if you already know but there's a removable cover on the gearbox side of the bottom of the bell-housing. Remove it and you can see the flywheel, turn the engine slowly and you'll see the holes drilled to balance the flywheel. If there is someone helping you one of you can put a steel bar, screwdriver or similar into one of these holes and use it as a lever against the bell-housing to stop the crankshaft rotating. Be careful taking up the initial free play on the bar as it will be close to the exhaust and someone's hands will be there holding onto it. Sounds too easy I know, but I've done it on two 2s now including my own.
