Why would you need to mod it?

because ms made it so you can use hdmi AND the component lead as the component lead is too big.... and as you need the component lead to use optical then u have to remove the casing from the component cable then cut off the video cables, so the 360 lets you use the 2 cables at once. other then that its pay £15 for the ms adapter that does the same thing (one in your link).
also you could plug them into an av receiver but not everybody has one of those.

Azz, the headphones use a digital output from the 360 - you have one on the scart lead (and you should also have another lead that just has the L/R speaker outputs and a digital output that came with your Xbox. Thats how mines be wired up - still run with HDMI, check your box before you buy.
