Ball bearing races are where the outer and inner races are stationary and the balls revolve so there is no direct friction on the selector pin, as opposed to a solid brass bush that would eventually wear oval through friction with the pulls and pushes of the gearchange to a non revolving bush without renewable lubrication. Your initial assembly grease plus brass rubbings would act as grinding paste where the softest material the bush would suffer. Only my opinion though for what its worth....
