Re: Restoration Show - **The AFTERMATH**

Post by Tiamat »

my car is due a front end rebuild (replace bumper bar and all the various associated fixings/bracketry) which we could do at the show. I've pretty much got all the bits now and am just waiting for some decent weather to have a bash at it.
I can hold off on the work until the show. I've also got bushes and braided hoses lying about somewhere that I never got around to fitting if we need any more jobs to keep people occupied.

Thats what needs doing Tom.

Think Kirsty is sorting that one out - may be having an MSN chat with everyone at some point.

I got an ass whooping by Kirsty (not an unpleasant experience \:D/ ) on the 'phone about how the thread has spiralled.

From what I can gather, there will be the MSN chat with everyone and then details will be posted up.

lol Just wanted to try and get stuff organised without batting posts back and forth on the thread . . . it's so quick to get everyone agreeing stuff on msn then we can finalise left over bits and bobs :D

Right, here's a quick list off the top of my head of everything that needs doing to my car which I either have the bits for or can get hold of them before the show, I'm not expecting us to get through all of it but if we can decide on some of the bigger jobs, I can always bring bits for the smaller ones if we have time to kill:

Main job is the front bumper bar replacement including fitting new fixings, metal strips and refurbished headlight assemblies (which I'll be sorting out beforehand). On top of this I need to do some work on the front slam panel. At the very least the top 2 bonnet catch bolts are sheared off and need to be drilled out. As access to these bolts from the front is awkward I'm planning on removing the slam panel and removing them from the back. Ideally I'd like to get the panel repainted whilst it's off but time could be an issue here. As an alternative I can try to get hold of a replcement slam panel and paint it, thenswap it out at the show.

On top of this I've got various suspension bits I've never got around to fitting including most of a set of bushes, full set of ball joints, front track rod ends and rear tie rod tubes. If we end up playing with suspension I guess we can also show off Tom's homebrew alignment kit.

I've also got a set of braided hoses to fit, last time I tried fitting them I knackered the fitting on one of the brake pipes so gave up whilst I could still get everything working. If I get hold of a replacement pipe before the show we can fit those. If were taking brakes apart I can also get hold of some refurb kits for the rear calipers and someone can do those off the car as it always a job worth doing.

Clutch needs bleeding at the very least and could probably do with the fluid changing, it won't take long but it's something else to do.

If we are doing any welding I found some nasty looking holes in the footwells at the bottom of the inner wing a few weeks back, this sort of repair is way out of my league but it's going to need sorting so if it interests anyone I can get pics of the area and we can decide from there whether or not to proceed. I also need to get some pics of my sills, I know they're a bit tatty behind the skirts but until I have a proper look and get some advice from on here i'm not sure whether they'll need replacing (which I don't think is realistic for the show) of whether they'll just need rubbing down and a bit of rust treatment and hammerite.

Another project we have on the go atm is refurbing vix's wheels. Not sure how far along we'll be by the time the show comes around but if they're in a suitable state we'll bring a couple along either just to display them as a work in progress or maybe to work on.

Sounds like its all coming together nicely, look forward to the MSN meet/chat.

Its a shame I hadnt time to try and blag some shocks, to go with the springs, but one of our contributor writers beat me to it, and has a set of Konis coming for his car for an article :(

I had an undelivered parcel message posted through when I got home, so thats probably the mk1 service bits and pieces.

Looking forward to the 11th! :)

Oh I forgot a job, the clutch slave cylinder leaks a bit and could do with either refurbing or swapping out. Obviously if we're changing the fluid then it makes sense to do it at the same time. I've got a spare off my breaker which I was planning to refurb and fit to either mine or vix's car so one possibility is for someone to refurb the spare as a desktop job away from the car then we can make a decision on whether to swap it over (and change the fluid) there and then or leave it for me to do at home.

Steve, Sorry you never answered my question on the previous page regarding photographer?

Kirsty, if you want my MSN address for a big group discussion PM me - I don't tend to list it on public forums... And I now have internet access back in my room so I can get online in the evenings again!

Cheers Steve. Sorry if I seemed a bit pushy! Just a bit worried as I don't think I'll be able to borrow Dad's DSLR if he finds out it's for a public event where it may spend time sitting on the sidelines IYSWIM... (which is fair enough really). And unfortunately it seems my compact is on it's last legs - and I've just run out of time to send it back to Olympus to be within the 2 year free service period... #-o
