OK, here's the footage :

Back from a 2002  the day before the IMOC trackday that was cancelled due to the storms that had hit overnight and the IMOC day was Sunday ..

http://www.imoc.co.uk/videos/AnglseyOct ... day_hq.wmv (3MB)
http://www.imoc.co.uk/videos/AnglseyOct ... _lunch.wmv (6MB)

And a couple that Rowland took in 2004 using his camera from the pitlane wall:

Heh heh heh - that should whet your appetite for oversteer ;)

Entry for School is very quick - I was taking that in 3rd gear. I'd guesstimate 70ish mph give or take a bit, but I was running crappy cheap TDFs. I'm fairly sure Jonny has said in past briefings that in a Caterfield on slicks you can take it at ~ 105mph. In the Full lap clip, I've backed off completely as I've seen a slow car in the corner that I don't want to tangle with or overtake mid-bend - I catch them up mid-corner.

Its a very tricky corner to get right as there are loads of possible lines through it, none especially 'right' - its a double apex corner - I usually stay wide of the first, clip the second and brake briefly before Abbots, which is off camber. If you don't, its easy to get big oversteer there and carry it up towards Radar at the top of the hill. Great fun.

Power wise, I turned the boost down to 10psi for trackdays so I can get a full 15-20 minutes before doing a good cooldown lap without touching the brakes and then heading in to let the car 'rest' for 30-40 minutes before going back out again.

Given that was taken in April 2002, I think I still had the standard CT-26 on the car - a few months later I went for the hybrid and thicker HG which saw the car producing just over 300bhp.

Actually, i've always taken school in 4th in both my NA and SC. You can carry more speed in that way. 85 was the limit in my SC on good road tyres. In my NA on A539s i tried it at 80 and it was very sideways, of course its difficult to compare cars really. (and erm not recommending anyone tries to turn-in any quicker than that! ;) )

The instructors say 4th as well.

4th for me as well. With our trick setup counteracing my lack of skill, I got to around 85 on 539s.. Tom will testify as to what that looked like - he was in the car behind 8-[

4th here too when I got a clear run down the straight, 3rd if I'd backed off to let someone past.

Just watching these videos (as well as some of the other ones from Lauren at Anglesey) doesn't make me feel very comfortable honestly.

People seem very close, Lauren almost whacked two Caterhams on the videos I downloaded!

I've never driven on a circuit before, never pushed the car at all :( I really don't want impatient people behind me ending up sending me flying.

Or worse, my lack of skill causing someone else to have to take a dirt drive...

Ho humm... The excitement wanes.

Lauren put her car in the position where if the Caterham didn't give way as he should of done, then she would have to take to the grass. That Caterham was behaving really badly on the day and IIRC might have been ejected or told to calm down.

Ok, but I'd make a couple of points :
1. If you are going to try and get anywhere near what your car is capable of, you can *only* do it on a track. Otherwise you'll spend £x on your car, and never really know what it can do.
2. Driving on track is 100% safer than driving on the road, IMO.

I'm not going to lie to you and say that Lauren was the only person to have an off at our October Anglesey trackday - Anna & Garrick both missed the tyre walls, Sy departed the track on the entrance to Abbots and I think BenF used the escape road there as well, but if you don't go past the limit, you'll never know where it is

I also wouldn't worry about your lack of skill causing somebody else to take a dirt drive. They are only there because they put the car in a position which required you to drive for them.

Go for some passenger laps, you'll see what it's all about then :)

oh, and despite all those offs, I think the only damage was to a mk1 rear mudgard (which would probably fall off anyway) and a few bruised egos :D

Aye... I wasn't blaming Lauren's driving skill! Just it looked close *_*

Yeah, sure it'll be fun on the day! Just worried about people getting tetchy if I am going slower than them.

heh, I can (almost) guarentee that you won't be the slowest there, and there is ample overtaking opportunity on the run to the hairpin and down the start/finsh. Just keep an eye on your mirrors and be curteous - everybody has to get out of the way of everybody else, sooner or later.

Well it has to still be safe to drive relatively slowly, because you should always do a warm down lap!
The trick is to keep an eye on your mirrors, and let the faster cars through. The benefit of open pits is that quiet times CAN happen (moreso than sessioned in my opinion) - especially just after lunch, and in the afternoon when people start to be adrenalined out! Then you can let rip on track with no fears (except about yourself!)

It wasn't really that close, I had to lose about 40mph which i did by braking mid corner causing me to have instant understeer, hence me running to the outside of the track, wasn't as dramatic as it looked really.

Yeah that guy was a problem all day on the track. I only went out once in the afternoon and went into school fully expecting the caterham guy to pull over, he didn't and much to my surprise (its not clear on the camera) was doing about 30mph!! which is really not what you expect tbh. I then spent the rest of the next lap behind him and again he just wouldn't let me past. I came in and waited for him and had a word about using his mirrors and general ettiquette. He apologised. Sorted.

Don't worry there will always be people who are slower than you and there will always be someone who's faster. I doubt i'll go out that much, but when i do i know there will be a lot newbies out there so won't expect people to see me. Don't worry about it!!

I was in the same position before Elvington last year - I was absolutely bricking it.. I class myself as a reasonable driver, and didn't reckon I'd be too slow - but after watching the first couple of warm up sessions I was scared witless that I'd be so much slower than everyone else and be a rolling roadblock etc etc..

Anyway - once you're out there, in the driving seat, everything seems a lot slower than you think as a bystander, passenger or watching videos..

If people came up behind me (which wasn't that often to be honest - the quicker tubbies one in a while, and the BaT caternail mostly, oh and the turbo Mk3's ;)) I just pulled over on the next available straight and let them past.. Generally speaking they were that much quicker I didn't even need to lift, but if they weren't gaining on me that fast (say simply a Mk3 that had carried more corner speed) then I'd let off to let them go by, as they're obviously going to be faster round the bendy bits than me.

Anyway, I didn't drive 11/10ths, probably 9.5/10ths (never span it, did get very sideways once or twice and did end up with two wheels on the grass twice), but still had an absolute blast.. best fun I've had, well, ever.

Do it, you won't regret it - honestly :)

And if you want any non-pantsoiling passenger laps before going out for real, just ask :)
