Is it the anti squeal shims, hairpin springs & anti chatter springs you need Alex :?:

I'll be looking out for some

Will let you know how I get on with that

Good luck Peter, can't find them anywhere.

They are sourced from the early ST185 calipers you have got.

They are not listed under the ST165s

Peter ST165s aren't listed as twin pots for the shims or clips, it comes under the ST185 which is why i was sent the wrong clips to begin with.

Brakes internation's online shop is down. ill email them tonight

No pics but just a quick note to say i had a couple of hours yesterday starting to plumb the engine in and get the loom on right.

Its amazing how intuitive it is really...

First start planned this week!

sprung a leak!

Post by boondougal »

Well my hopes were getting high, i had a solution to fitting my elise back box sorted (a company called Jettex very close to me was like an exhaust aladins cave!)

This was soon to be dashed as i started to fill up the coolant - the first leak was from the bottom valve on the radiator.. i think the o ring has failed... not major but a steady drip no the less.

The second leak was worse, i didn't notice it at first but i traced it down to the thermostat housing, it just seemed to be coming out of the join... everything was tight so i'm not sure what happened, hopefully i haven't split the housing.

Anyway i drained the coolant to below the housing level and called it a night... lets see if i can solve it later today

When my HG blew up and put it all back together we found that when we put the coolant through we had not put the stat housing back together correctly. The stat itself was not seating correctly and created a gap in the housing.

Just take it apart and put it back together again. Simple mistake to make when your excited.

Super, you were spot on with the thermostat gasket, i had not realised it sat around the lip of the gasket instead of on top of it... all sorted now.

I spent the rest of the day making an exhaust from a lotus back box that i bought about 5 years ago...

I forgot to take pics but here she is fitted

Image

well there was no more waiting... i had to take the plunge at some point.

i wanted to turn the engine over without the plugs in first to get the oil flowing so i took the plugs out, employed the wife to turn the key and to my amazement the engine turned over....

Plugs fitted, cables back on....ok, first prize to the person who comes up with why i couldn't start her!!!

Because you restored your car in your loft, and your mrs didn't want you filling the house with exhaust gasses.

Worse still, you have no idea how your going to get it to fit through the hatch and down the aluminium step ladder

its alive!!

Post by boondougal »

well i decided to get brave and turn the key... well i let the wife do it so i could see what was going on and on the third turn of the key... hey presto!

it ran for about 5/10 seconds before i decided to turn it off due to it bouncing widely on idle..

Here is literally the next turn of the key..

hopefully you can hear the idle, touching the throttle seems to have no effect..

Image

so... any ideas.

My first guess would be TPS...

Replied with the correct diagnosis on TB, typical Mk1 idle bounce, i've given you the test proceedure :thumleft:

well thanks to the ever knowledgeable PW i have narrowed downthe issue to the TPS.

Here is the car running with it taken off but still connected electronically to simulate idle..

the car settled nicely to about 1k so assuming i can assemble the TPS correctly this time then on with timing it up!

Not running bad considering i thought!

Great news.

I saw the vid before reading replies and thought a TPS issue likely because if you disconnect the TPS it tends to do that.

Get it sorted and then, um just a few more jobs to do before you get back on the road. :+:

Haha, umm, yep just a few jobs to do.

I have tried to look at the timing but tbh i can not seem to figure out what i need to do.

I have a timing gun, i have hooked it up, pointed it at the pulley but can't seem to see anything... I have an aftermarket solid job but i have put some black marks on where the timing marks are but i still can't see anything.

i am right to assume it wouldn't run if i had it 180 degrees out?

i also am getting 11 flashes and 7 flashes when i bridge the diagnostic connections

White marks will show

Try a spot of Tippex perhaps

You need to short the diagnostics to get rid of the advance.
