well i would hope so, the MK3 took all its gubbins from my engine so its similar to them, they hold 13psi so mine should hold the same (much more comfortably due to having a bigger block)

Tubby with VVTi. Lovely job. good fuel consumption too 8)

hmm well my fuel consumption isn't too different to a moded tubby when i put my foot down (and that can't be helped coz it's made of lead  )

but yes i would like patrick to make mine the 1st beams turbo (that i know of) but i dont know how much bhp i'd be ab;e to get out of it (want 300 min @ the wheels ideally) 8-[

It's been done before....

91 na to turbo beams vvti.
heres a list of mods...

99 beams vvti w/about 30k on motor
custom tubular manifold for 20g turbo
hks standard wastegate
custom filled engine mounts
3in d/p and 3in 5 zigen exhaust
custom 2 1/2 in intercooler piping
spearco liquid to air intercooler
5 gal water cell in front trunk w/jabsco centri puppy and audi radiator.
haltech f5 w 2-550cc inj.
apexi safc 2 w dyno tune
greddy profec b spec2
hks turbo timer
supra tt fuel pump w/-8 ss lines to tank
aeromotive regulator
blitz blow off valve
95 e 153 tranny and axles
4 puck bronze clutch
arp head studs
ported and polished head

the car dynoed 262whp and 245ft lb at 10 psi on pump gas w 10.5 to 1 afr.
it ran 13.1 at 103 at moroso

And realistically, it gives sub par gains for the money spent, in comparison to the same amount of $$ spent on swapping to a gen 3 3sgte.
It's potential is much more limited too, with such high compression.
You'd get a fair amount of cash selling the redtop anyway, as it's a relatively rare engine, and in demand with enthusiasts.

If you want to stay beams, I say keep it NA, make it a screamer. :)
Someone I know is making 240hp at the rear wheels with an NA beams engine, they have plenty of potential. :)

I'm just putting the finishing touches on my own beams swap/rebuild.
(fully balanced, port & polished head, TOMs extractors, apexi intake, new pistons/rings/gaskets/belts etc. etc.) Cams on the way, but not until I can afford a decent ECU to go with it. (Looking at a MoTec M400 to control the VVTI = $$$$!)

So it should go alright, and I'd rather keep it NA than put a hair dryer on it. :P

A few individuals that I know have acheived 185 and 197whp with just bolt ons and fuel management on an NA redtop.... more power is realistically acheivable with an NA engine, afterall you've got the top NA motor available for the MR2. :)

My god that would be a sweet engine. Where's the redline?

The only comparison is the s2000 engine which is 245FWHP and redlines at 9250rpm =P~

No you're missing my point. Yes you could turbo the beams engine. but I'm thinking of 'Beamsing' a turbo engine. Ie beams head on a built turbo block.

Obviously they'll be complications, as with any hybrid build. that's what I would do anyway, if it was something I wanted to do.

No, I'm not in the USA, but little old New Zealand. :)

So please excuse my foreign terms for various things. :P

re: 240whp beams:
This belongs to a guy in Australia that I talk to. It has a flat torque curve from 4000 to abou 8600rpm, where it starts to drop off. But I could live with that. :) It revs to about 8700 IIRC.
I cant remember the exact details, but I've got some more info on it at home. Suffice to say, it has had a lot of money spent on it.

Regarding a turbo engine + beams head:

This isnt quite so simple unfortunately.
The VVTI block has a bulge on one side of it, which houses an extra oil feed which runs up to the head, to supply the VVTI mechanism with the oil pressure that it requires.
(I have some pics of my block on my PC at home, I'll post some later to show you what I mean)
I would imagine that it would be very costly to get a block modified to have this additional gallery.
Although, a beams block would do nicely, as it has the block strengthening mod that occured on all 1997+ 3sg(t)e blocks, which makes them a lot less susceptible to cracking when pushed to high RPMs/Horsepower.

The VVTI intake manifold wouldnt suit a turbo application, as apparently the pressed steel plenum and intake runners dont hold up too well to high internal pressures. (assuming that you're pushing enough PSI through it to make the cost of turboing it worth while!)
I would imagine that a cast manifold would be more suitable. or perhaps the redtop manifold can be strengthened. It would be nice to keep the bell mouthed tubular intake runners if you could. :)

But, (IMO,
) all of this time/money would bring negligable benefits over a well thought out gen 3 turbo setup anyway.

And be prepared to spend big bucks if you want an ECU that can run a turbo VVTI engine properly...
As not many ECUs have enough functionality to control VVTI effectively.
In fact, many ECUs would have trouble running the coil over plug setup as well.
(wasted spark is not an option... it overheats the coils!)

Here's a pic of the VVTI block.

Look between the 1 & 2 cylinders, on the near side of the block.

The small bulge there, and oil feed line, are used to feed oil into the head, through the cam shaft, and into the VVTI wheel.

This is not present on a non VVTI block. 8)

And here's a 'much too large to post' pic of my redtop, when it was still being reassembled, if anyone is interested. 8)
