Hi All,

Just had the 2 out today as it was dry for a change...

Only down side was I have my engine warning light set up as a knock warning light and whilst giving it some in third the light flashed twice at me @ about 6,200 rpm. Never seen it light up before!?

D'oh! Will have to keep an eye on this! Boost was only showing 1.1 bar at the time!

It might be that the map is taking too much fuel out at higher rpms Craig, it might be going a bit lean

So today has been great!! Not!

Just popped down the road when I joined the dual carriageway and when I changed up to 5th there was a loud bang/pop and engine died!!

Image

Just got the car back home and started checking everything I could, no leaks or pipes off or anything out of the ordinary?? Checked the timing belt etc..

So decided to try and start her up, it chewed on a little but then fired with a spine chilling bottom end knock! Sounded like two hammers hitting each other!

So sounds like the bottom end has failed in some way!

What to do now???

Cheers Craig

Peter Gidden - SBITS wrote:I certainly wouldn't be pushing an engine with 3 cylinders running 30psi less compression than the 4th, let alone sticking a bigger turbo on.

Unless of course you don't care if it all goes bang.

Good luck!

as Peter told you, this would happen, i'd personally look for a used engine and pop it in, then run a stock turbo, stock ecu etc....or with bolt ons. i'd make sure the engine was healthy before doing anything.

Hi sheppy,

Yup agreed so like you say find a new motor or rebuild the current one.

On a side note I have just checked the last recorded boost log and it showed up 1.97 bar! Guess that was a factor in todays action. Boost was set to 1.3 so a large spike for some resson?

terrible news mate but for the sake of having the car back on the road (this is just what i'd personally do) i'd just find another motor and pop it in, obviously a good one, before any of that though, i'd try and determine what caused such a massive boost spike. could be a split actuator hose or something.

Hi Gaz,

Yeah not great news but hopefully the start of a new engine project.

Will get new year out the way and decide where to start.

Sorry to hear this mate, gutting when they let go :(

Take your time, strip it down, work out what went wrong and then decide what to do. Personally if you still plan a big power build I would not just buy another engine and stick it in, I would build something you know is capable of taking what you want. That way you aren't taking the risk of buying an engine that already has issues and it all going pop again.

Full engine rebuild, new bearings, forged pistons, nicely shimmed up head, cleaned and tested injectors, pump, etc and then you'll know you've got a solid set up :thumleft:

Feel for you mate ..

Id agree with ashley in that if you want big power then rebuild the engine that let go if it is not scrap. Although this is costly to do properly.

Or I would source a good rev3+ engine and run that for 300bhp or so with a hybrid and power fc.

Hope you get it all sorted mate as love the car :pale:

Well unfortunately I dont the space or facilities to carry out a strip and rebuild as me and my lass our house hunting and residing at my parents house.

I think I will have to pay to have it rebuild with my spec in mind and salvage all useable parts.

Will have to see where will be the best to carry out the work?....

Yeah a chat with Peter in the new year and see what he thinks, getting the car down there might be a pain?

Hi All,

Well I had a call from Peter @ Sbits on Monday and had a little chat about what direction to go with a fresh build.

Were both thinking one of the bearings as let go hence the bottom end knock and with the engine already running forged pistons/rods these will hopefully be salvageable.

The basic plan:

Re-use the Rev 2 bottom end.
Slot in another 2nd hand crankshaft.
ACL race bearings.
Re-use the eagle rods.
Re-use the wiseco pistons (Fit new rings though).
Decent flywheel and puck/paddle clutch – Brand to be decided.

ARP studs to be used where possible (Head/Crank/Flywheel etc).

Rev 3 head to be used and fully built (cams/adjustable pulleys/valves/springs/ etc).

Plan will be to fully use the potential of the GT3582r turbo kit I have but allowing a safe tolerance for reliability.

So to start collecting parts over the next 2 months or so then get the car down to Peter.

Cheers Craig
