I've read somewhere about someone converting an MR2 to have a hydraulic handbrake, what do the supras use for a handbrake mechanism? I think it was a foreign chap who converted his car to use Fiat coupe headlights.

They use the internal diameter of the hub of the disc as the handbrake.
There's basically the same set up as old drum brakes but inside the hub of the disc. If that makes sense lol.Re: check this track car on race cars direct
He is using the 4 pot callipers on the front, but by the looks of the picture when its on axle stands, not the 2 pots that go with them on the rear. You can still make out the calliper holder.
Maybe its only the front that he is upgrading.
Or maybe the has not changed the rears in the pic yet. Could also be using the smaller Supra rear callipers.
Top Guns red trd has the 4 pot Supra callipers on the front.

I looked into using a hydraulic setup for the hand brake,but apparently the hand brake needs to be mechanically operated to pass the MOT.

I wonder how much work would be involved it fitting the Supra 4 pots to the front as the calipers can be picked up for only £200.
They are very powerful brakes.
Also how much would it upset the balance of the car if the rears were left standard?

Interesting, that's what Toyota told me too, it's wrong though.
They work on the main pads on the disc. Hence all the winding pistons in and out to get mine to pass it's MOT!!!-

He means that the supra brakes work on an internal hub, not the MR2.
They are definately stock rears though.
And yes you do need a mechanically operated handbrake for an MOT.

This guy appeared on the beams owner group in mr2board towards late last year I think. I think he has 2 race prepared MR2's -one of which is an itb'd red top though I don't think this is that one looking at the rocker cover (think his red top one has a white body though I need to check on that one).
I like the idea of sitting in the boot to work on them though!!
Credit to those proving you can tune the 3SGE IMO.
Do the supra rear brakes work like my ST205 GT4 -drums and cable operated shoes for the hand brake with hydraulic piston brakes for the foot brake. I can't see how that arrangement couldn't be applied if you so wished on the MR2 -allot of faffing round though I guess but the cables for the hand brake could be re-routed?
