Front Brake Discs

Post by embalm-a »

My discs on the 1b are at the moment well warped and in need of a replacement. I have seen these on ebay, can anyone vouch for them?

I have been told that (circular) grooved/drilled discs also wear pads down quicker and there is no great difference to a standard disc. I am running ferodo "race" pads, so may be only true on standard pads? :-k

Was also thinking of upgrading to celica calipers (ST165)? I think i read some where these will work with a normal sized 1b disc aswell...yes?

So basically what do other owners think is the best combo?

TBH I wouldn't touch those disks - I've run with grooved disks and all they did was increase pad wear, including uprated pads. Plain discs are fine ( and a lot cheaper ) for both road and track use.

Yes, the ST165 twin pot calipers are a direct swap for the Mk1B ones, but you may need to upgrade the rears too to avoid messing up the front/rear brake bias

Dont go with the rotordisk ones they are abit hit and miss and have a really complicated run in proceedure that if you do one thing wrong they will warp them.

CRN 40 groove are very good i had them on my Mk2 and as long as you fit them so that if you rotate the disk the groove runs outwards instead of inwards they dont wear the pads excessively.

I think for 180 or 200 you can get a full set front and rear and ebc greens from ebay.

I've used Ferodo "Race" pads on trackday and road with bog standard plain discs of the sort you'd get for £30 from brakeparts.co.uk

They are fantastic. Good initial bite, loads of feel, shocking stopping power on track (my passenger was kissing the glovebox on more than one occasion :eye: ) and NO SQUEAL or excessive pad wear. Never faded once either.

Unless it's looks you're after I can't see any reason to go groved/drilled on a standard MK1.

I've said this time and time again, but it won't hurt saying it again :clown:

Standard discs from brakes int with decent pds are more than adequate. I've had issues with Ferrodo DS Race" pads (2500 & 3000) before, but it is in heavy track use. I guess they would be fine for road and occasional light track work.

Don't bother with ST165/185 upgrades. Utter waste of time and effort. Not only would you need to increase the rear, but you would need to improove the efficiency of the whole system by using a larger master cylinder too.

There are a few AW11 owners who have ditched their celica "upgrades" because they just don't work. I'm sure they will post up comments if they read this thread.

Yep - braided lines are worth doing, especially if your existing ones are old.
