my rev3 diff doesn't have its own oil - it just used the gearbox stuff.

oil I used is Mobil 1 75w90 fully synthetic stuff, which I believe is the correct thickness.

to change - gearbox sump is quite obvious from underneath - a 21mm nut.

gearbox filler plug is half way up the front - also 21mm. Eeasy to see from in front of the rear nearside wheel, and has a little label on it.

you need 4.2 litres I recall, but as you'll never empty it fully 4l will do before it starts spilling out of the filer (which is how you know when it's full).

ps gearbox oil stinks - get some gloves, and a proper oil drain box.
the car needs to be level to fill, so if you jack the back up, put the front on ramps

pps I use 2 feet of hose pipe and a funnel so I can fill the gearbox from the top of the engine

Hi
its possible to fill the box from the engine bay then? where is the fill point located and is it accessible from the top though the engine bay?
If the rev3 uses the gearbox oil to supply the LSD how do you drain the LSD? or does it drain back through the gearbox? any more info :thumleft:

One thing to get out of the way nice and early - you can't change the diff oil because it doesn't use oil for lubrication. The diff is sealed, and is full of weird gloopy silicon stuff.

The fill point the BGB talks about is on the side of the gearbox, about half way up, sort of behind the passenger seat. You'll need a tube and a funnel - run these up to the engine bay and fill from there. I did this a fortnight ago or so, I think the bolts (fill & drain) are 23mm and say 'Refer to owners manual' on them. Make sure you take out the fill bolt first, cause you don't want to drop your gbox oil and then discover you can't replace it :)

BGB states gearbox capacity as 4.4 - fill it up until it pours out of the refill hole and then you're done - make sure you do it with the car level!! I only got about 3.5-3.8l back into mine.

I read the BGB a lot in my spare time (probably shouldn't admit that lol) but I asked most of the same questions a while back :) See http://www.imoc.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?t=102052

the capacity is 4.2 litres - 4.4 US quarts

not that I'm pedantic or anything...

and it doesn't really matter, as you can't buy less than a litre. I got just under 4 litres into mine.

Ah whoops!

Mind you, if we're being pedants, you can buy gearbox oil in less than 1ltr, Redline oils are bottled per US quart, not per litre ;) (0.946l)

Don't need a pic.

NSR wheel off. Take a look underneath. One big 24mm drain plug facing you, and one 24mm plug front face of gearbox, near the top. Can't miss them.

oil level dipstick

Post by cosmos »

Have i read somewhere that the oil level is 5mm below the filler plug thread level and you use an allen key as a dipstick. Dont let it drop into hole though................
