Replacing factory dual-din with sony single

Post by dabcabc »

I just put a deposit down on a lovely L reg UK GT T-Bar today, going to pick it up on Tuesday (banks closed on bank holiday, what's that about?!?) and want to replace the standard dual-din cassette/radio with cd changer in boot job with my sony single-din mp3 headunit that i'll rip out of my civic.

Was wondering what i'll need to fit the sony into my '2, can i fit it straight in or will i need an adaptor? I take it i'll need to purchase a wiring adaptor as i did for the civic. Also in the spare slot i'd like to fit one of the "cubby hole/extra storage" jobbys that i've seen mentioned on this forum. Has anyone got any links to one i can buy, and what will i be looking at to pay for it?

Can't wait till Tuesday mornin when i can go for a cruise in my shiny silver '2 :D

Welcome :)

Your Sony unit should fit in without problems, you'll just need a wiring harness to connect your new headunit to the cars wiring:

PC2-17-4 if no active speakers (around £12 from Halfrauds),
PC9-406 if active speakers & Apr 1990 to Jan 1994 (approx £35),
PC9-411 if active speakers & Jan 1994 to Apr 2000 (approx £35).

To cover the blank DIN at the bottom, I'd recommend a DIN Pocket, do an internet search for an FP-11-01 :) Expect to pay around £20-25, or go to Toyota themselves and ask for one (there's isn't called an FP-11-01 though) for around £12.

And here's a link so you can do it yourself (not difficult with good instructions):

mine's a rev2, 1993 car and required the PC9-411 connector in the end :(

also because my stereo only had rear pre-outs then i had to purchase a line level converter to connect the front speakers to the rca connectors, and the exisiting connector had a broken earth cable (only worked that one out when we found the existing stereo would only work when the cd changer was plugged in).

otherwise all was good, thanks for the help
