I’ve been wondering how many MK1s there are left in the country

Post by Bazzbiggles »

I’ve been wondering how many MK1s there are left in the country. I see many on ebay as being sold as MOT failures but are these being renovated and put back on the road or broken and scrapped? Recently I’ve noticed that there seems to be more priced up in the £k’s and advertised as being minters. I’ve only been watching ebay for around 6 months now, so may be mistaken, but do you think that are we seeing the end of cheap MOT failures and the start of refurbished cars being offered at high prices? Just a thought.

There are still a lot around, especially around the £1k mark, most of which need some bodywork attention, and some in need of some structural work. Would hazard a guess that theres somewhere in the region of 1500 road worthy examples left?

Mine is currently up for sale for just over £2k, its not been restored as such, but has been very well looked after, doesnt have any rust, and has had a lot of work done on it to keep it in good order struturally (e.g. undersealed from new, suspension rebuilt, new brakes etc) and aesthetically (respray 5 yrs ago, and just had the seats refurbed at significant cost!). I have seen a few advertised in the £5k to £6k bracket in a similar condition, but these are ones which have had a complete rebuild.
