Head unit from USA

Post by Ian Geary »

I've just fitted a Pioneer head unit that came from the USA (you can't get this model in the UK).

It's got more features than you can shake a stick at: eg 2 x RCA out, cd multichanger compatable, remote control [why?], aux input jack, MP3 & WMA etc compatable, graphic equaliser setup and is 4 x 50w mofset.

All this from USA for £96 including delivery!

This blows Halfords prices out of the water - you struggle to get a bog standard CD head unit for that price.

At more importantly, the green backlights match the Toyota's.

I was a bit wary about ordering from USA, but apart from 14 day wait it was a doddle.

Here it is http://plasmacreations.com/customer/pro ... 332&page=1

Just thought I'd share this with you all :D

What about the radio features, can you change the stepping to UK and do you have RDS?

ie. FM US will step every 200mhz i.e. 93.3 93.5 93.7etc UK step every 50mhz i.e. 93.3 93.35 93.4 etc. so there will be some UK radio stations that you can't get. The same applies for AM, US step in 10's and UK in 9's.

philz - you're spot on.

we tried using the tuner today and discovered that the 200mhz steps miss out stations with even frequencies, which is pretty annoying. Our local station can be picked up, and it wasn't until we went out of the area and tried picking up other stations that this became apparent.

Plus it doesn't have RDS (so no traffic news etc). So a bit more research before buying would have been useful. I had no idea the USA used different steps - why didn't they mention it on Friends? (my only exposure to US culture)

As it is, another (UK) Pioneer stereo I've got does allow me to change the mhz step frequencies, so I'll see if it's possible to do this for the USA stereo we've got, otherwise look on the net for some advice.

Oh well, you live and learn.

On a stereo I had from Oz, there was a little switch on the back of it somewhere that changed the frequency range, but I don't know if it changes the step as well, as I never got the thing working again.

Not sure if yours will have the same thing though.
