GTA IV Smashes All Previous Day One Sales in the U.K.

The ELSPA, the Entertainment Leisure Software Publishers’ Association, has revealed day one sales in the U.K. of Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto IV for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. As expected, the game broke all records:

Grand Theft Auto IV has broken all previous records – selling an estimated 609,000 units

Thursday 1st May/... ELSPA, the Entertainment Leisure Software Publishers’ Association, today reports that day one sales of Rockstar Games’ hugely anticipated Grand Theft Auto IV for Xbox 360 and PLAYSTATION 3 have comfortably eclipsed the previous record set by GTA: San Andreas in 2004. Tuesday 29th April sell through for Xbox 360 and PLAYSTATION 3 reached 609,000 units - comfortably beating the previous record: GTA: San Andreas for PS2, which sold 501,000 units on Friday 29th October, 2004.

“The scale of GTA’s day one sales are phenomenal and reflect a vibrant market which continues to grow. Gamers are from all age groups and demographics with estimates putting the total number of people in the UK who enjoy games at over 20 million,” said ELSPA managing director, Mike Rawlinson.

Initial Day 1 'GTA: San Andreas' PS2 was Friday 29th October, 2004 at 501K units.

GTA IV combined PS3/360 (All formats record)

Initial Day 1 sales are estimated at 609K units for Tuesday 29th April which is a new record.

Xbox 360

Microsoft's 'Halo 3' launched on Wed 26th Sep07 and the day 1 sales were 266K units.

The new 24 hour record is 'GTA IV' which on initial estimates recorded 335K units on Day 1, Tuesday 29th April.

PS3

The previous record has been well and truly eclipsed. This was set recently by Sony's 'Gran Turismo 5: Prologue' launched on Friday 28th March with Day 1 sales of 80K.

The new 24 hour record is 'GTA IV' which on initial estimates recorded 274K units on Day 1, Tuesday 29th April.

Well GAME and Gamestation in Hastings were completely sold out of the 360 versions but had about 30 copies each on the PS3.

When i went out to get mine on the tuesday, was about 10am, There were loads for both consoles in Woolworths and gamestation. Even argos has some in stock.

i got mine from zavvi at lunch on tuesday in leeds and they seemed to hav plenty of both.

Dnt kno if thats cos they got a late delivery or what.

Zavvi and HMV Leeds are out of stock of the PS3 version (both got 10 copies today and had a queue outside, Zavvi have XBox ones) but Game have loads, none at the White Rose though.

my mate said asda on release night had 70 copies for the 360 and 25 for the ps3 or something.

i bet MS shipped alot more over cos the 360 is outselling the PS3 as the article says so its weird the PS3 one is sold out.

70 Copies for the 360 in one store isnt a great deal though is it really. 25 for the ps3 is a joke.

Woolworths had shelves full for both consoles.

in tescos it's no.1 and no.2 on the top games chart

i went food shopping at midnite and thought "crickey! it's not normally busy at this time" then heard on the tannoy telling peeps waiting for gta4 to wait at customer sevice desk.. There were loads of irritating chavs messing around the store e.g. opening bread and chucking them around

i played it on my bro in laws ps3 and was awesome.

I wandered into Asda at about half 11 and thought the tills had broken as there was about 30 people just milling around. Was even more confused when the self service till worked. Only when I heard it on the radio afterwards that I went ahhhhhh.
