[Mk2] [Turbo] Cambelt and Water pump change - surely not?

I've just been reading through the BGB for a 1991 Mk2 turbo to see what's involved with changing the cambelt and water pump as I am helping a friend to do his.

The BGB is publication no. RM179U1. I assume this is the correct one for a Rev2 tubby? Is that right?

I can't believe what it says is involved!

Step 6: Remove Intercooler. Is this really necessary?

Step 16: Remove cylinder head cover Why?

and on and on it goes.

I don't understand at all. I have looked in the Knowledge Base and there isn't an article regarding cambelt change.

Can anyone advise me: Do I really need to do all these steps?

Intercoler removal definiteley not neccesary

they advise to remove the cylinder head cover so when lining the cam pulleys up you can check on the cam bearing caps although that isn't neccesary as the markings on the pulleys are sufficient , just put the crank at zero and mark everything when you take it apart and put it back together using the marks and you can't go far wrong

Intercooler mine was remove, because of not much room to play with,

beside, rather remove it then damage it,

i done mine not long ago!

i suggest removing the intercooler for all the time and effort it takes, not too difficult to do. but before you do it remove the engine lid side panel, this gives you loads of space compared to what you have with it in place

You need a tiny allen key. i used a G clamp to compress the tensioner while i put the allen key through the hole in the tensioner body to hold it in place while i installed the tensioner in the car.

removing the engine mount bracket and belt tensioner is fiddly as you cant really see the bolts for them!

the water pump and belt are the easy parts lol!

Yes in retrospect I do actually agree. It's very easy to damage the fins on the intercooler so I ended up taking it out anyway so that I could use a little flatbladed screwdriver to straighten out the fins I had bent over .
