I've been getting a strange metallic grating/vibration type noise coming from the rear somewhere. Seems like it's gradually getting worse. It's not mega loud but you can hear it most when revving at 2-3000rpm even at a standstill. Wondered if it could be the gearbox but the oil level is fine and all gear changes feel good with no crunching. Could it be exhaust-related? Any ideas peeps?
Thanks.

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] Grating type noise
Could be gearbox mate, input shaft bearings make that kind of noise about 2-3k stood still!
the advise i've been given is don't worry about it but it doesn't sound too healthy! Try putting some Redline gearbox oil in and see if that quietens it down a bit

If it is the input shaft bearings, can these be replaced or does it mean a new box?
Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] Grating type noise
Have you checked for play in the long drive shaft? There is a bolt with a rubber end that stops the support bearing moving, but this can wear resulting in a metallic rattling noise at certain revs. It only costs a couple of quid so might be worth changing.
