Where can i get Stick on front number plates?

Post by Deano2915 »

As it says, i'm after a stick on front number plate, unfortunatly nobody wants to sell me one. I know they're illegal, but i'm willing to have a small brush with the law for the sake of a nice looking front end.

Just had a browse on the DVLA website, it says nothing bout mounting it vertically!! As long as its readable I think its ok. There are some rules bout character spacing and italics but nothing about stick on number plates so its all a bit strange really :?:

I think from memory that classic cars are exempt and allowed to have stick on plates but not modern cars for some reason since other spitfire owners I knew with stick on plate never got any grief from the Police. Then I could be wrong. :-k

I asked a local MOT station about mine and they said as long as it's visible from a certain distance and standard spacing/lettering then no probs.

They won't do it. Halfords won't even provide numberplates with your website along the bottom telling me it was illegal.

In the end i just used aplates dot co dot uk where i could get them made to spec.

I'm getting mine delivered (tomorrow hopefully) from fancyplates.com as Lauren suggests. A mate recommended me and you can have it completely blank if you want. I getting mine with a small silver border as a little detail.

You can customise to have different styles/colours of borders..... BUT you must have the standard font and exact character spacing/order for road display. Don't worry about not having the BSA number, or address of plate manufacturer (as DVLA asks) because if you look at plates 5 or so years old, they have nothing!! Who's to know you only just got the plates

For the sticky bit, well just buy some sticky pads from Halfords or your local auto factors

Enjoy!!

DVLA says,

Rules for the display of number plates are set out in law, briefly these are: -

:: A number plate must be displayed at the front and rear of motor vehicles (with some exceptions).
:: Number Plates must be easy to read and meet the British Standard.
:: Lettering should be black on a white plate at the front and a yellow at the rear.
:: The background surface should be reflex-reflecting but the characters must not.
:: There are separate requirements for traditional number plates displayed on vehicles constructed before 1 January 1973.
:: Lettering and spacing must be of a set size. They must conform to one of the groups shown at:- Number plates fitted after 1 September 2001 or Number plates fitted before 1 September 2001.

I found a friendly sign shop

Then I got chatting and told the sign guru that whatever I ordered was for shows only and therefore nothing to concern mr plod.

I then signed a waver and I could get anything I wanted.

Your plate is only a bit of plastic or sticky back with writing on after all.

Its then up to you to interpret the law, your chances of getting away with it, as of course the plates are not really for shows, are inversely proportional to the micky you are taking.

cops have the power to sieze plates which are illegal, and you can end up going to court.

is it really worth it just to look like all the other boy racers in their Novas?

just my 2p

I think a better idea is not to have a front plate at all 8) , just carry it in the boot and say it fell off....
