fitment advice needed on tyres for 8J &9J

Post by CosmosblueMR2 »

hello all,
was wondering if someone could assist me as I'm trying to workout what tyre's will fit without rubbing issues for 8 & 9J (front and rear).

model: Rev5 Mk2
suspension: standard struts with Eibach Sportline Springs (-25mm)
rims : front 17x8J offset 33
rear 17x9J offset 40

Ok I can stretch my exisiting tyres (front 215/40/17... rear 245/35/17) but was wondering what's the largest tyes people know that can be fitted with these rims/offsets on the mk2.

FYI perfect rolling radius I worked out using a tyre calculator compared to standard 195's and 225's was :
fronts on 8J 235/30/17
rears on 9J 285/30/17
will these fit ? or will i have to go with my originals and stretch ?

appreciate any advice/ knowledgeable insights - there are quite a few Europe based 2's I've seen with very wide wheels so i guess it can be done.. ??

cheers
Frank.

yes but the front rolling road radius on 235/40's are 7.6% out compared to standard :-k
does front RR radius not matter as much ?

Not on the front no. The speed is driven by the gearboxes, so as long as the driven wheels are the same, the ratio between g/box and wheel will be the same. Only problem at the front is suspension.

235x40 wont fit - you wont get more than a 215x40 on the fronts. 255x40 is fine for the rear.

offset dependant tho yes - or are you taking into account this 33 offset for the fronts...

did you mean 255/35's are ok ? as 255/40's are not as per original Radius

what about 225/35's fro the front and 255/35's for the rear would that work / fit with my above offsets ?

let me know and my conundrem (spelling :-k ) will have been resolved... thanks guys =D>

With coilovers you could fit what you like under there. There is loads of room between mine and the wheels. Standard shox spring seat is the main proboem people have. Coilovers eliminate this tho.

All the coilovers I have seen have pushed the front wheel too far away from the car to avoid fouling the wheel. With most suspension setups 215x40 is the most you can get on the front - regardless of offset - its the diameter that limits you not the width!.

255x40 is absolutely fine for the rear, although without a wider front the car will understeer like a VW golf!

I'd stick with the 215/40's up front and go for a 35 profile on the back - I wasn't aware that anyone made a 255/35/17? (something i've never come across or been asked for before anyway) If you want to go wider than a 245/35 then the next tyre size available (i think) to keep a close rolling radius is a 265/35 only Michelin make these but i'd have make some calls tomorrow to confirm the above are still available and the info regarding the 255's is correct.

Might be worth having a nosey through the US boards to see if anyone runs 265/35's on 9j rims to see if theres any issues or if you'd need to modify the rear arch lip to get them under.

Anything bigger than 215-40-17" will tramline badly on the fronts! Something the handling concious will want to avoid like the plaque :?

As for the rears you would in all honesty be far better off going with 245-35-17", the reasons being......

1) You will be almost spot on with the original rolling radius

2) Any bigger and like mentioned you'll be forced to go yet bigger up front or else the balance will cause excessive understeer

3) A wider tyre will be even more prone to understeer in the wet

4) Wide tyres cost a lot more £
