4 weeks ago, I changed my HG, but still had a slight problem with lack of cooldown suction (never checked head for warpage), and spent a lot of time checking for leaks finding none.
This morning I checked coolant, topped up, and went to work. After about 10 motorway miles, saw steam behind me, so by the time I pulled in, temp guage pegged to hot.
Opened engine lid to find coolant rad cap sitting on header tank, I am an idiot.
Q. Have I now defo warped the head?
You may well have got away with it if the gauge was still showing hot, it's when it drops from hot to cold that you really are in the poo. Fill it up and drive it, see what happens. It would be a good idea to bleed the whole system.

Black is not a colour ! .... Its the absence of colour
Lolz (sorry but I did)
Never done that but did drive a fair way before remembering I hadn't put the oil cap back on, pulled over and had to wait for engine to cool to retrieve it from the depths....
Also in first car (Metro hatchback, pre-MR2 I was the destroyer of Metro's) regulary forgot to check I had closed the boot properly and thus had an interesting spoiler.
ew, ive done that too. my sister once put water in the engine, so dont worry youre in good company.
if you let the engine cool down before you put cold water / coolant in, and as mentioned if it was reading hot at least there was enough in there to register then you are probably safe.
how much coolant went back in (how much did you lose)?
