first mr2, what tyres shall i get?

Post by DamienMR2 »

ive got an M reg rev 3 with standard wheels its my first RWD car so i dont wana spin it or loose grip and crash, so what are the best tyres to get? at the moment its got yokohama A022 (what are they like?) all round but they only have 3mm of tread, so wana replace them soon, was looking at the Toyo Proxis Ts-1, think its about £350 for a full set, are they the best? if not what tyres shall i get?

Hi Damien

If you had £500 (or less by about £50-75) I'd go for a full set of Goodyear Eagle F1's

If you've still got standard 14" the price will be lower as well.

I use them, and they give the BEST grip in the wet and very good dry.

thanks mate for the advice, they are standard rev 3 15 inch wheels, 195/55/15 at the front 225/50/15, cant afford over 350 tbh mate, but i saw them toyo proxis ts-1 and heard they were good, and got a pricce of £93 at the back and £66 at the front each, how much will the goodyear eagles be on my size wheels?
any help appreciated

£75 for the back mailed to you (each) front

and.. umm... £131 for the rears.

Cheapest I could find for the rears from blackcircles.co.uk

was 93.93 for the Toyo's and Falcon ZE 152's at 75 odd. Falcon's have some ok reviews.

i'm planning on shodding my mr2 (when i get it) with f1's....theres a safe bet (although my prefered choice is actually uniroyal rallye540 as they excel in traction, which is what you want really, but they dont do them in the rev2 on rear size).

bracknell tyre and battery do f1's for £106 each (rear) and £64 each (front)...doubt you'll beat those prices, and so may be worth a commute.

bruv has them on his 300zxTT, load of poop, car can spin in even a spot of rain on the road, hopefull they're better on the two though! they're good in the dry though!

if you's after a cheaper tyre but still pretty good them set ur car with falken 512's,or better 451's. the rear eagle F1 price takes the pi$$, madness!

Hi All,

Just recently had Khumo 711's & 712's fitted and all I can say is for the money £235 fitted they are superb in the dry and the wet, and I am a fairly spirited driver. When they do finally lose traction it's predictable and easily controlled. You pays ur money and takes ur choice.

Had Toyo's when I first got the car, didn't like them that much.

Changed them for Bridgestone SO3s, much better.
Went through a phase of F1s due to not being able to get hold of the SO3s, depending on condition of the road the F1s tended to be better but around 3k miles less between changing the rears.
Now have an SO2/SO3 combination and it seems fine in all conditions :D

I would suggest MyTyres.co.uk for prices, some places with price beat will also match/beat their prices if you print the price page, which is always worth a try in my book :D :D

SO2s (if you can get them). SO3s and F1s are your best bet.

Avoid TDFs (Taiwanese Ditch Finders) like Nankang, dark dog etc....

i had a set a while back (admittadely not on an mr2), and they just lacked grip, and didn't last long. their predecesors, the 502, weren't too bad...but nothing i'd rave about.

Kumho 712 =D>

Very good reviews on these, I have a Set for the rears as well.

Do a google on them and you'll have to search hard for a bad review!
Only paid £75 each fitted for 235/40/17!

I've got those Bridgestone Potenza S02's (235 and 255) on the Supra. Great tyres, but expensive compared to other good brands.

The Toyo Proxes T1-S (now being replaced by the improved T1-R) is a good performing tyre, especially for the price... not quite F1 or S02/S03 league, but not their price either!

Mytyres prices for F1's are hard to beat.
Question Why 195-55 on the front ? thought they would have been 195-50
can anyone explain ?

tried the kuhmo's as well....and i didn't like them either! very similar to falken 512;s actually.

but remember this wasn't on an mr2 and some tyres work better on some cars than others....also personal preference can be different.

I have decided to try a set of Toyo T1-R, they are getting some good reviews. I had T1-S on my last MR2 and they were very good.

mytyres.co.uk are cheap for these. I will see how they go, currently got F1's.
